Backyard shooting noise

I don't shoot 50s at home because, I don't want to piss off my neighbors. I try not to shoot cannons or rifle cartridges too much either. A structure, berms, pits, etc. will not suppress the noise but, they will redirect it. Also, noise can be an interesting thing and can travel a long way depending on wind, air conditions, etc. Sometimes, it's hard to know exactly what will happen until you try diverting the noise during different conditions.

Is it 150 yards or feet? I know a guy (not me) who lives in the county and shoots in his back yard because his closest neighbor is just over 150 feet away. Is he wrong?

There are different laws and ords in different areas. Ventura County requires 300 yards.

The noise travel will set your limits. Do a little "testing" before you buy. Check with neighbors too. Then carefully examine the SDSD no-shooting zones and maps. I would visit Gore's goons for a face to face approval.

Super Colibri's are your friend for quiet shooting. Quiet enough for indoor apartment shooting even.

I had seen pictures somewhere of basically giant supressors. Like a 55gal drum on its side, 6" hole on each end. Maybe lined with foam and a baffle or two. Maybe make a little stand so it can be up next to your table for bench shooting. For the cost of a drum and 30 seconds with a torch...

Super sonic rounds with silencers still make a fair amount of noise.

I just talked with all my neighbors and let them know what was up - only one had even the slightest issue so I just call and let them know when the range is going hot.

I kind of like the idea of the 55 gallon drum converted into big bore silencer ...

California does not have any laws against stationary suppressors which are not attached to firearms.

I need to try this!!! My dad usually only lets me shoot about 100 rounds with my AR before he says to stop because it's too loud. I hope these work.

Put a linear compensator on it. My wife hated my AR with a muzzle break. She said it was like getting hit with the wind from hell.

All linear now, no more complaints.

A linear compensator does nothing to redirect sound. It's exactly the same thing as having an extra 2 inches of barrel

The 55 gal drum with sound insulation is a good idea for stationary rifle practice.

A better idea is me buying a different home that's listed on 21 acres. The property is a real long rectangle shape with I'd say 18 of the acres extending far down into a canyon. I figure if I shoot at the bottom of the canyon where I'm about 3/4 of a mile away from the nearest and only 3 homes in the area at the top of the ridge, I should be pretty good as far as the sound goes. It should funnel through canyon and out into an uninhabited valley. I'm mostly interested in being able to shoot my 9mm pistol on steel targets. I can live without rifle training but the 9mm pistol(Sig P229R) training is a must! I'd be shooting 147gr pistol ammo which is subsonic and should reduce some sound. I would also only practice between 1000-1400 during the weekdays to even lessen the burden on my neighbors. I'll buy a Sig Sauer Mosquito as a training tool also if the noise is an issue.

If the deputies show up, I'll address it accordingly. I already did a few knock and talks on random homes in the community. They said the sheriffs had been called on them before to their house for shooting noise(12ga trap shooting) and told them that there was nothing they could do but a neighbor called and complained.

When they show up, let them do their thing re:advising you of the noise complaint/assuring you're shooting in a safe manner. Then offer them your phone # so they can just call you the next time.
They can't just blow off a complaint from the public, but if they can make a 1 minute phone call to clear up the issue, their due diligence has been fulfilled with less disruption for you.
