Backyard shooting noise

How do you decrease firearms noise for backyard shooting? I'm in the market for a piece of property on 5-10+ acres in an area zoned for unregulated shooting in San Diego county(North Escondido or Valley Center).

While outside viewing a potential home today on 11 acres, I heard a large caliber rifle, .308 or similar and it was barley audible. I'm looking at building a structure to suppress the sound signature from a firearm up to .308 caliber to be a good neighbor. By law, I can shoot a .416 all day and the Sheriff can't do much but in my opinion that's rude.

Based on my scientifically proven google research, I've seen several 3 walled shooting structures that have been built into hillsides filled with insulation that look great. I'm not interested in building a shooting tube or triangle like the Swiss. That eliminates my ability to practice shooting on multiple targets quickly at more than one distance.

Here's the bottom line.

What have you done for you freedom owning property owners out there to shoot on your property in peace?

Can't give any specific help, don't even have a backyard, just wondering if you've checked NRA resources? They have a big bunch of practical advice on range building, from what I've read.

I would use an excavator and dozer dig a trench 24 feet wide with inclining 6-12 foot walls and a 20 foot backstop. Make it as long as you want your range or have room for. I would think the noise would be buffered by the high walls being directed upward rather than outward

Op, you can cast or buy some cast lead bullets then load with imr 800X. Makes a very quiet round and you can replicate long range ballistics at much shorter ranges

Whatever you purchase you must be 150 yards from neighbors occupied buildings or have permission to shoot. Build an open front structure with sound board or tectum inside between studs or line with spray foam.

If you are truly looking to make a fully functional range to be used quite often, I'd look for a larger parcel farther out in the cuts. My "neighborhood" consists of 10 acre parcels where it's legal to shoot, and most of us do. That said, it's taking care of rodents, livestock, etc...... It's country living & is as normal as barking dogs & roosters. What gets most neighbors riled is excessive shooting, and to be honest, I don't care to hear it all day either: my wife works nights (day sleeper)

Yep. I shoot on my property too, but only .22 as the rest are way too loud imo. I can shoot my 10/22 all day, but as soon as I bring out my handguns, some of the neighbors dogs go nuts so I have to shut it down. I'm on a hillside, so everything echos something fierce. Good luck OP.

My backyard range is dug down about 4 to 5 feet then we built all 4 sides up another 4ft. Seems to work well shoot the rifles some but mostly handguns

Is it 150 yards or feet? I know a guy (not me) who lives in the county and shoots in his back yard because his closest neighbor is just over 150 feet away. Is he wrong?

Legal but seems kinda rude
