The related criminal charge is the big question, and it really relates around the population factors where you were shooting. On the high side, the deputies could document a "Reckless Discharge of Firearm" (Penal Code section 246.3). That charge is a felony, but is also the type of felony that could be prosecuted as a misdemeanor. They may also have documented whatever Riverside County Code provides for unlawful shooting (the difference between the charges being the level of danger presented to persons downrange).

I'd be extremely surprised to see felony charges filed. Misdemeanor charges are possible, and really depend on the D.A.. You also may be invited to appear at a D.A.'s office hearing. At the risk of over-simplifying the process, its the equivalent of getting "chewed out" by the boss. The hearing officer will visit the facts of the incident with you, and if satisfied that no further judicial action is needed to impress the significance of the event upon you, then its over. Make sure that you really understand what the process is before you walk in the door.
I agree 100% with this post.

Rifles or handguns? Loans can be made for 30 days and recipient must have HSC for handgun loan.

If I did remove them from my possession it would be out of state beyond CA's jurisdiction.

One last thing, stop handling firearms when you're drunk! That's like the biggest mistake you made and hopefully didn't tell them.

Please let what guys here are telling you sink in. At best they let you off with a warning, time will tell if the D.A. wants to chew your arse!

Can you be absolutely sure that nobody is out hiking in those mountains? Can you be absolutely sure that a couple kids aren't out being kids in those mountains? Please, for the love of God, identify your target and what's behind it next time. Making an assumption that there is nothing out there because it's "just mountains" is stupid and dangerous. If you're going to shoot in your back yard, shoot at a man made berm or the ACTUAL side of a mountain with a clear sight line, not the general direction of one.

I hope you never do that again. Know your target and what lies beyond.

You will need to give me all of your weapons except the offending .22.

                Let us know what happens.

                Good luck

One of the legal folks here will chime in but there is a time limit for filing charges.
Otherwise, you should discreetly inquire how long that is.

Shooting guns and drinking alcohol at 10pm - no bueno! Keep us updated and look into buying some CCI quiets the next time. Let us know what happens. Hopefully nothing comes of it and it's a lesson learned.

I'm not going to "cut you some slack". You were drinking and shooting guns at a random mountainside. Would you say the same thing if it turned out that you actually had shot someone? "Hey man, cut me some slack. I didn't know he was out there. It's a long ways away and I'm drinking" GTFO!

It's one year for the misdemeanor charges. Three years if the D.A. opts for the felony flavor of the PC 246.3 charge.

Typically it runs a lot faster than that unless the day has a reason to stall, then you see charges filed the day before the statute runs out.
