Just TWO YEARS AGO, in Ca, it was perfectly legal to buy certain firearms from non FFL holders on a cash and carry basis without a background check or waiting period.

Just asking....what wee the certain firearms? Thanks

Only 8 states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington State) require a background check for all firearm transfers, including between private parties (so-called "universal" background checks). President Obama and gun control groups want the whole country to be like those 8 states.

2 more states (Maryland and Pennsylvania) require background checks for all transfers of handguns only.

4 states (Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts and New Jersey) require firearm purchasers to obtain a license or permit first, and a background check is required to obtain the permit or license. 4 more states (Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and North Carolina) do the same only for handguns.

That leaves 32 states where background checks are not required for private party sales, or gun show sales of firearms by non-dealers.
It isn't just "a few" states that don't require background checks for sales by non-dealers, most states don't. Most states are not like California.
