Lol. Just stand at the back of the line and tell them you would give them $120 for each handgun and $220 for each rifle if they go with you to a FFL and sell it to you. Almost like scalping but you can look at it as you are doing the owner a favor and giving them another opportunity to unload their gun.

I wish they'd allow FFL's to use a mobile home as their place of business. Just think of the cool stuff you could come up with if you parked a big Winnie near one of these things with a sign on it saying "let me look at your gun before you sell it for less than it's worth."

Don't have to be an FFL, you could just do that and if you find something you like just tell the person to follow you to the gun store and you'll pay them what it's worth.

I would at very least show up and offer a estimate of value with a Blue Book of Guns in hand. I would offer 2x-3x the buyback price on the spot. IF they still wanted to sell for $100 let them.

The guy giving up the M1 left at least $500 on the table and whoever gave up the Thompson lost over $1,000.

The times I did show up at buybacks the LE shooed me away with threats. they wouldn't let me stand on the Property they were doing the buyback, I think it was the Masons Lodge.

We would have elderly widows come into the station wanting to dispose of their husbands guns (as well as ammo). I would tell them to take their guns to an FFL and at least get some money for them. Most listened, but some just wanted to be done with them. Too bad...

How can they legally do a buy back without an FFL?

Never think of these events as a "buy back" as the firearms were never purchased from the government.

Instead, think of them for what they really are. A compensated surrender of a firearm to police.

We had a couple of girls bring in a pair of handguns a few years back to our station saying that they had belonged to their now deceased father and they didn't know what to do with them. They figured maybe we could use them or something.... We thanked them and then gave a few phone numbers for some local gun shops where they could at least get a little cash (the guns were Hi points or something; nothing fancy) if they were certain they didn't want to hold on to them.

A friend had a lady turn over a NIB Tec-9 once... She was positive she didn't want anything done to it or to sell it; she only wanted to get rid of it and have it destroyed

CA laws grant Gov/LE agencies an exemption for "buying back" firearms from non-FFLs. [PC 27850]

The LE agency acquiring the firearms will then have three options:
                                1. Destroy the firearms. [PC 18005(c)]
                                2. Sell the firearms via auction or to a CA FFL dealer. [PC 18005(a)]
                                3. Return them to the lawful owner, if they are determined to be stolen. [PC 18005(b)]

                                Penal Code 27850
                                (a) Section 27545 does not apply to a sale, delivery, or transfer of firearms if both of the following requirements are satisfied:
                                (1) The sale, delivery, or transfer is to an authorized representative of a city, city and county, county, or state government, or of the federal government, and is for the governmental entity.
                                (2) The entity is acquiring the weapon as part of an authorized, voluntary program in which the entity is buying or receiving weapons from private individuals.
                                (b) Any weapons acquired pursuant to this section shall be disposed of pursuant to the applicable provisions of Section 34000 or Sections 18000 and 18005.
