If I didn't keep the bullets in the mag, where would I keep them?
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

Anybody else race cars, bikes, boats etc? One of the "consumable" items in a race engine are valve springs. Every season for an amateur like me I replace the valve springs as a part of engine maintenance. The spare motor sitting on the shelf, it doesn't get new springs as they haven't been used (cycled) yet.

Got a 100 round and 60 round sure fire as well as a ton of 30's all loaded and ready to rock. Speaking of, I forgot to count that ammo lol. Guess I have about 1k round extra.

Here's a comparable concept. Your car has a suspension. A suspension consists of springs. When you don't drive your car, the car's springs is still under a load (compressed). No wear and tear is happening during its inactivity. So why would a loaded magazine cause wear?

Keeping mag springs compressed only introduces minimal wear to the spring, which will mostly come from temperature changes while compressed rather than being compressed in the first place. Don't worry about it.

Unloading and reloading your mags introduces more wear than just leaving them loaded. If you're unloading your mags and then reloading for use to protect the springs you're undoubtedly introducing more wear than just leaving them loaded in the first place.

Keep them loaded. It won't wear out the springs.

                          Leave them loaded, it's fine.

It depends on the magazine, aluminum AR, no lips will spread, polymer magpul, yes, if you use the cover to depress the rounds, steel mags do not seem to have any issues. My two cents.

I keep my pistol mags loaded, especially the Shield's tightly sprung mags.
My legacy, large cap rifle mags are empty.
