Seriously, these things happen. The thieves were extremely ballsy and pulled off a pretty serious coup on this one.

These are guns which are kept in a locking bracket, in a locked car, in a locked lot of a police station filled with police officers who are coming and going. Could the guns be safer if they were kept in a safe in the station instead? Yes. Should they do so? Well, the extra thirty seconds to two minutes it would take a cop to get the gun before going to the patrol car to respond to a serious situation could have some serious consequences.

It is not like there is an epidemic of this stuff. It happens. The guns were in a very secure area. People steal artwork from ridiculously well secured museums and money from BANKS also. It happens. I am not concerned by this theft. I do have to give a little grudging respect to the ballsy thieves who pulled it off though. That is some serious egg in the face for the PD.

Wait a minuite what happend to the 10 day wait? I did not know they had an FFL for the PPT in the parking lot. Doh did they install the BB button in the parking lot? Man did they dissasemble the high caps to make rebuild mag kits? Isn't the Colt HBAR on the named list, hope they checked that before taking ownership! I doubt if it was locked all those ways. If it was, then the thief had to pick the lock to get into the gate, jimmy the car door, and then unlock the rifle. This would take some time.....if no one was watching during all this lock picking, shame on them.

My bet is the gate was open and the car was unlocked. A quick grab and run.

Interesting how the Chronicle calls an AR-15 stolen from the CHP a semiautomatic rifle but a similar semiautomatic rifle stolen from a civilian or used in a crime would undoubtedly be reported as an assault weapon.

Bad news for the CHiPers. Wonder why the thief didn't grab the shotgun too.

Very true. Officers return to the station numerous times during their shift. Book a body (duh!), use the restroom, turn in a report, or speak with the "Powers that be" are all reasons to come back to the station. Just like Tyrist said, all equipment is to be checked in at the end of shift. I have personally never seen a LEO leave the equipment in the vehicle after shift. Why? As simple as "C.Y.A." That way you dont get blamed for damaged equipment.

Instead of condemning the officer/department (due to own personal agenda), focus on the criminal brazen enough to commit this crime. This isn't a law abiding citizen with a rifle, it's a proven criminal. This is who we may go against on the next "call".

My "personal agenda" is that I don't want it to happen again. I don't want LEOs looking down the barrels of their own guns either. But instead of "it happens", how about "let's improve the security at the station". There's quite a difference in mindset between those two statements.

The article says that the rifle was stolen sometime during a 24 hour period that the vehicle was parked, somehow I doubt it was still on duty.

Like they say on the automotive forums, you can have all the alarms and anti-theft features you want, and it still won't be 100% theft-proof.
