Just for casual target practice, fun shooting- maybe some hunting, I am a old lever action guy just now getting interested in AR's. Iron sights maybe scope later.

I do so more research ask pals- guys at the rifle range

        Thanks again!

At that price range you can easily get into a Colt 6920 which is a top tier rifle. It's a great rifle and one you can hand down to your son one day if you take care of it.

For a bit more you could get into a BCM or a Daniel Defense...also top tier rifles but with a bit better fit and finish. My preference would be DD, BCM, Colt, in that order (I own all three btw). But there are no bad choices here.

For around $700, you can get a M&P Sport. Not a top tier rifle but a decent gun. I'm just giving this to you for comparison sake.

Others will undoubtedly suggest you build a rifle. That suggestion has merits as the build process will teach you a lot about the gun. However the possible downside is no warranty or recourse if you have problems and it will likely be harder to sell...if any of that matters to you.

Good luck finding a Colt new. Windham is a great brand as well.

Turners has Colt 6920s in stock. Colt 6920 is pretty much the gun other ARs are judged by. It falls squarely in the middle of the price range at about a grand. Yes, Windham makes a fine gun, but only a Colt is a Colt.

I don't own one but the person whose opinion about guns I respect most is all about DD to the point that he has since sold all of his other rifles. That's what I'd get if I was going to get a DI AR

My Windham SRC 556 has not had a single problem with over 5000 rounds downrange. Fit, finish, and build quality are excellent for a rifle that cost less than $800. They also stand behind their rifles with a lifetime warranty.

Buy a colt. Better to buy one than build one. Marketplace is full of pos franken ar's, people are trying to dump.

G&R has a pretty decent deal on a Colt. Might have to call them and ask to have a Bullet Button put on, and of course no 20 rnd mag. They are CA friendly as I have ordered a BCM lower from them.

Light weight? Daniel Defense. Cool factor, with annoying iron sight to get in your scope view? Colt 6920/6940 (although this doesn't matter if you're planning on using an RDS/holographic optic)
