I know that it's difficult to be specific with a general question, but what are some good mid cost range- AR type target rifles to buy?

This. Focus on a quality barrel and trigger. Everything else is just parts.

I think most people new to the AR world want to buy something that's ready to go and not have to deal with parts matching or diagnosing problems if they arise.
They are easy to build if you have basic mechanical skills, but you'll likely need a few extra tools.
Not sure what you consider mid price range, as they run from a low of about $500 to well over $2000. You can get a Colt for around $1000, and a Daniel Defense or BCM for around $1200-1400.
If that's more than you were planning to spend I would recommend a Smith & Wesson M&P Sport or a Delton 316 at around $600-650.
I'd start with a basic model to discover what you like and what you don't, then start collecting parts for your own build.

I suppose you need to define 'best' in your opinion.
Do you want to compete - i.e. - bench rest shoot?
Plink?
Hunt?
What range do you want to shoot? 100yds? 200yds? 1000yds?
Do you want to use a scope or iron sites?

Just some issues to think about.
IMHO befriend someone here that lives close to you and they can help you I am sure.

1000-1200 dollar range.

Just for casual target practice, fun shooting- maybe some hunting, I am a old lever action guy just now getting interested in AR's. Iron sights maybe scope later.

I do so more research ask pals- guys at the rifle range

I'd just build one from PSA. Free float 16" barrel and a nice trigger. It should be good for 500 yards with iron sights.

Built/bought plenty. Sigs are the highest quality for the price I have come across. If you can afford a Daniel defense I prefer them but they are more expensive generally than similar sigs
