This is just simply FUD working exactly the way they want it to. Most people I know have no clue about this stuff. Especially the LGS and local LEO. They don't care what the law actually saws, if it looks scary or not abundantly prevalent it's not CA legal.

I was in the stall next to him, and didn't involve myself in the conversation, but did listen as some others told him that it wasn't a legal configuration. I just assumed it was a RAW until I heard that he just picked it up earlier this year (A Masterpiece Arms MPA-308). The interesting part of it was his response as he mentions that he's a recently retired police officer, "It's not illegal to use standard mag release at the range, you just have to install the bullet button while transporting between the range and home".

Needless to say several others jumped in to inform him that he was wrong, which he replied that he's been enforcing gun laws for decades and that none of them knew what they were talking about.. Not sure if he was lying about being a retired officer, but if he was little scary that he was so misinformed of the previous 15 years of laws around it. I hate the laws and want to seem them changed, but if people that are supposed to be enforcing them don't even know what they are how are we supposed to fix them?

So we can roast the OP, point and ridicule "idiots" at ranges and "cops" that don't know the law in our little anecdotal world here all day.

Bottom line, the laws of our state ARE confusing and too numerous. It's no surprise to me that you have these situations where people are misinformed, then confusion ensues. Oh, you haven't helped at a Calguns booth in the middle of the panic and talked to thousands of ill-informed people too? You should try that, it's interesting.

Aside from carrying around a big penal code book with you, best move is to direct them HERE, calguns.net and hopefully we can inform, guide etc etc. Also, hopeful we don't have to try and shame every misinformed individual.

As for the concept of seeing something that may or may not be "illegal", a funny vision runs through my head...

What if you went to the range one day and everyone just tossed their mag locks? All over the state, simultaneously. You'd get some arrests over time but eventually it would just become so common, I'd bet it wouldn't get enforced and could be more easily overturned in court. [daydreamin'] And some guy pointing and staring and going hysterical "that's illegla!" You laugh and proceed to proceed with your day, paying no attention to the db.

And herein lies much of the danger to knowledgeable gun owners; far, far too many LEO are tasked with enforcing laws they know very little or nothing about. It may not be entirely their fault, and the vast majority of them are good folks, but when they make mistakes they must be held accountable. Same goes for ignorant citizen range folks, but for them often the most they receive, if anyone bothers, is an education and occasional embarrassment. When making what you think are legality statements and comments about equipment belonging to another, best policy is to keep the mouth shut, and the ears open.

It is this, 100%. I try to keep up with current law but it's impossible without the flowchart in hand. And that is just for one type of gun. I'm so relieved when I'm in Arizona where none of this California obfuscation is in effect.

This is why I keep copies of the flowchart in my range bag for rifle and shotgun.

We've all heard these types of conversations and as much as you want to go ape-crap on them, walk up, smile, hand over a copy and say "you're welcome".

Then go back to what you were doing before hand.
