Interesting conversation on BB's.

Was at the range today and the guy next to me had a .308 in 24" barrel, bolt action, pistol grip, bipod, 10 round mag, and standard mag release.

I was in the stall next to him, and didn't involve myself in the conversation, but did listen as some others told him that it wasn't a legal configuration. I just assumed it was a RAW until I heard that he just picked it up earlier this year (A Masterpiece Arms MPA-308). The interesting part of it was his response as he mentions that he's a recently retired police officer, "It's not illegal to use standard mag release at the range, you just have to install the bullet button while transporting between the range and home".

Needless to say several others jumped in to inform him that he was wrong, which he replied that he's been enforcing gun laws for decades and that none of them knew what they were talking about.. Not sure if he was lying about being a retired officer, but if he was little scary that he was so misinformed of the previous 15 years of laws around it. I hate the laws and want to seem them changed, but if people that are supposed to be enforcing them don't even know what they are how are we supposed to fix them?

Bolt action is exempt.
Standard mag release is fine for anything except a semiautomatic, centerfire with evil features.

This is incorrect for a semiautomatic-centerfire rifle.
The standard mag release must never be installed while in California.
IF an AR lower is attached to a .22lr upper, or if it has none of the evil features, then the bullet button is not required.

His status as a retired, or even ACTIVE LEO, does not exempt him from AW laws EXCEPT if he is using a RAW belonging to the department.
Kamala even went so far as to say that retired LE can not keep RAW that they purchased while working.

Bolt action, pistol grip, standard mag release, no problem. The real story here is that a bunch of misinformed people at the range were harping on a guy who was doing nothing wrong.
