    Do you own a gun?

Ok, I thought this was a joke, but guess not. At my doctor visit yesterday, I was asked that question.

What is funny is that I remember very well that this question was asked before (many years ago) within this same medical group by the same doctor.

Kind of surprised. I wanted to tell him, "you've asked me before and the answer is still the same, I own so many that I've lost count", but somehow I just said "yes".

I thought about saying "no" to maybe get on the good side of things (for future safely), but that'd just make for fewer gun owners in somebody's stats.

I have never been asked by my doctor, but if i were I would simply say no.

Did the doctor mentioned anything else after you said "yes"? Like giving you advice/recommendation on guns?

Standard question. There was a thread about this a while back.
I wouldn't take offense, but would ask them to test for lead in your blood.

The same thing happened to me - amazing how that happens!

doctor: do you own a gun?

you: I can appreciate your trying to make extra money but I'm not here to buy guns dr. I'm here about the medical thing.

doctor: I was just asking because..

you: look doctor you're obsessed with your gun sales. do I have to report you to the AMA or find a different doctor? now let's just see if you can go to the rest of the appointment without bringing up guns again.

                              ;-)

seriously though, I think the doctors are being pushed into asking the questions.

the answer should always be "no".
unless of course you're seeing a psychiatrist for depression or something similar.

my reasoning behind that is when the doctor writes "yes you have guns" on the little piece of paper (which goes into the computer and can be shared through anyone that has access) you don't know who's going to see it.

maybe the doctors moonlighting as a cat burglar. maybe the receptionist wants to broaden her gun collection.
may be the cool janitor knows a guy that pays big for that kind of information.

it's none of anyones business unless you openly share that information.
