    DIY Target Gong Stand

Sup guys. I've seen a lot of members asking for target gong stands. I made my own. It is not the cheapest but all the parts are readily available at a local hardware store. In my case Home Depot, I've checked prices at Lowes and they are similar. I've included prices and model numbers for easy online ordering. (prices are current as of June 2015)

I've used 10" and 12" AR500 (1/2 inch) plate on this. In the picture, a 10" plate is attached to it. The pipes are 1/2 inch, i have another one that is 3/4 inch but that brings the cost to about $50. I have shot up to a 308, 223 and 7.62x39 on this.

See attached picture for diagram. You would have to use some muscles to screw it in. Screw in the legs first to use them leverage. The stand can be disassembled for transport. Make sure to angle the legs, the diagram doesn't show it.

    TARGET STAND ITEMS
    (A) 1/2 in. x 18 in. Black Steel Schedule 40 Cut Pipe
    Model # 306 12X18
    $5.07 * 5 pieces = $25.35

    (B) 1/2 in. x 1-1/2 in. Black Steel Nipple
    Model # 583-015HN
    $0.91 * 2 pieces = $1.82

    (C) 1/2 in. Black Malleable Iron Threaded Tee
    Model # 520-603HN
    $1.97 * 2 pieces = $3.94

    (D) 1/2 in. Black Malleable Iron 90 FPT x FPT Elbow
    Model # 520-003HN
    $1.54 * 2 pieces = $3.08

    Merchandise Subtotal $34.19

    MOUNTING HARDWARE

The chains, I already had, they are about 1 foot.
I checked around, they cost about $1 per foot. Sorry don't have exact item number and price for this

As for the mount from the chain to the target, the order is as follows:
Screw - Flat Washer - Target - Split Washer - Nut - Nylock Nut - Flat Washer - Chain - Flat Washer - Nylock Nut

I stole this design from an item i found on Amazon. It gives it a nice downward angle for deflecting bullets down. The bolt size is 3/8, you can get 1/4" if you have a heavier target. You can also try an EYE hook, it will give it a nice angle too but a beefy eye hook is expensive (about $3 each). Also you can knock the price down if you skimp out on some on the nuts, but i don't recommend it because if you shoot a lot fast, the plate will swing free and can bounce back to you.

    Home Depot Parts/Price
I try to buy bulk where possible.
This set can make you 3 pairs of mounts (2 chains per target)

3/8 in. Zinc-Plated Nuts, Washers and Lock Washer (6-Piece per Pack)
    Model # 803542
    $1.98 * 1 = $1.98

    3/8 in. Zinc-Plated Steel Flat Washer (8-Pack)
    Model # 802501
    $1.18 * 2 = $2.36

3/8 in. Zinc Nylon Lock Nut (10-Pack)
    Model # 802632
    $1.97 * 2 = $3.94

3/8 in. x 2-1/2 in. Zinc-Plated Hex Bolt (THIS ONE COMES IN 25 too)
    Model # 800856
    $.37 * 6 = $2.22

    Merchandise Subtotal $10.50
    or
$3.50 for each target with some left over pieces

I'm curious to see what happens when you hit one of those heavy pipes. Some friends have stands that use electrical conduit and bullets go right through and don't collapse or even knock the stand over.

Actually, if u look at the picture, the front right leg was hit. It went right through it, and we didnt find out until we were packing up. I put tape around it so the sharp edges wouldn't cut anybody.

I know mine came out more expensive than this... and the chain hangers are softer steel which I have damaged. I like that yours are AR500
