Oceanside Target Shooting - I Was There!!!

My husband and I were at target looking for some patio furniture after having lunch. We were way in the back of the store. I honestly didn't hear the first shot!!! There were several women with kids around me playing with toy swords being noisy, and I was pretty engrossed in the chairs. My husband was an isle or two away, when he came over to me and said "did you hear that? It sounded like a gunshot?".

Honestly, everything continued as usual for another 15 or 20 seconds. Then we heard another bang, and there was no mistaking.

Several mistakes...big ones. My husband has a ccw...AND HE WAS NOT CARRYING!!! Big life lesson there.

Mistake #2: we had no situational awareness. We were lost in the store. People started running and screaming and we didn't know if we were at the back of the store (closer to the mall) or one of the sides. We could vaguely tell that the shots were coming from the front of the store.

Luckily for us, the employees all wear the distinctive red, and even more luckily, they all know where the back exit is and were running for it. We followed them, and a bunch of other people through the back and out into the mall. Another lucky thing, it wasn't very crowded so no stampede.

We actually saw some people still pushing their Target carts full of stuff out the back door, so I'm thinking some people took the opportunity to do some shoplifting..

Bottom line is that we were very unprepared, but very lucky. We were probably as dumb as you could hope to be. Very disappointed in ourselves and we're looking at this as a wakeup call to be more ready and alert in the future.

Glad you are both ok. Take the close call to heart and be glad you got out safe!

Ok I admit I thought this was about Iron Sights when I clicked on the link.
There is no week nor day nor hour, when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their supreme confidence in themselves -- and lose their roughness and spirit of defiance -- Tyranny may always enter -- there is no charm, no bar against it -- the only bar against it is a large resolute breed of men.

You did well, so don't be too harsh on yourself. Even if you had the gun on you, the best course of action would've still been exactly what you did - get out of there. Armed self defense is for when you are in an imminent danger, such as the person shooting being in sight and coming at you.

It doesn't sound like a ccw holder would have been much help in this situation unless they were within sight at the time. It sounds like by the time the 2nd shot went off the suspects were already fleeing.

I used to shop at that store when I was living in Carlsbad. I pretty much CCW'd my glock everywhere when I was down there. Now I know why. OP, not sure how your husband scored a CCW permit, but if he has one, he should be carrying.

Ha. "Target shooting" means something different to me than "a shooting at Target."

                    Anyway, glad you're OK.

Did exactly the right thing. If hubby had the gun, it should have been used only if you were in a situation where you could not get out, and you were in danger of being injured/killed. Other than that, if he happened to see someone about to be shot, it would then be a personal decision on his part whether or not to put himself in harms way to save an innocent stranger.
