My husband and I were at target looking for some patio furniture after having lunch. We were way in the back of the store. I honestly didn't hear the first shot!!! There were several women with kids around me playing with toy swords being noisy, and I was pretty engrossed in the chairs. My husband was an isle or two away, when he came over to me and said "did you hear that? It sounded like a gunshot?".
Honestly, everything continued as usual for another 15 or 20 seconds. Then we heard another bang, and there was no mistaking.
Several mistakes...big ones. My husband has a ccw...AND HE WAS NOT CARRYING!!! Big life lesson there.
Mistake #2: we had no situational awareness. We were lost in the store. People started running and screaming and we didn't know if we were at the back of the store (closer to the mall) or one of the sides. We could vaguely tell that the shots were coming from the front of the store.
Luckily for us, the employees all wear the distinctive red, and even more luckily, they all know where the back exit is and were running for it. We followed them, and a bunch of other people through the back and out into the mall. Another lucky thing, it wasn't very crowded so no stampede.
We actually saw some people still pushing their Target carts full of stuff out the back door, so I'm thinking some people took the opportunity to do some shoplifting..
Bottom line is that we were very unprepared, but very lucky. We were probably as dumb as you could hope to be. Very disappointed in ourselves and we're looking at this as a wakeup call to be more ready and alert in the future.
