Im assuming this is a farm, if its a personal i own 40 acres and want some cool trees then NO.

That was another question. He is not a hunter. If he had friends bag a deer, would they be on the hook if found with parts of the deer, ie meat, skin...

Seriously, what is wrong with you people. Build a fence. They are wild animals drawn in by plants you planted. What are you going to do? Shoot every deer that wanders through till you exhaust the population in the area? A over aggressive yote or lion is one thing but hammering the deer in an open orchard is pretty lame.

Call DFG and ask them. Here is the problem though. We are in a drought, and many of the usual and preferred plants deer eat here in SD have all been heavily browsed back and have not regrown, so they're moving down the line to secondary browse choices and anything else they can find, so some nice lush green leaves on some irrigated trees are going to continue to be a deer magnet in that area (I live in rural SD county BTW). And given the health of the deer population right now it's unlikely they're going to give him cart blanche (via depredation permit) to just start blasting every deer he sees. As mentioned they may require That some other deterrent methods be employed first.

Otherwise everyone in the back country would just plant a few deer magnet trees and then ask DFG for a permit to start blasting deer year round.

How many trees are we talking about here anyway?

Tell your buddy to get a hunting license and a deer tag (although it too late for this year) and enjoy easy deer hunting in one of the hardest places in the country to hunt deer.

I've be happy to come out with my deer tag in the Fall and take care of one of them for him!

I don't have any specifics. It came up in a quick 'hello' while picking up our kids from school.
I figure any .gov agency will give a run around or dead end AT BEST, so I was looking if anyone had first hand experience or accounts/info.

In all honesty I don't see them issuing a depredation permit for that. Like stated, it's not like a random nuisance mtn lion or something.

Call the DFG office though, they're pretty responsive about that kinda stuff.

I have not hunted under a depredation permit since the late 80's but, it use to be pretty simple to get one. Anything taken with a DP did need to be immediately reported and turned over to DFG (now DFW).
