FYI.
"bullet button" maglocks are not legal compliance devices in NY.

So, a firearm equipped with a maglock is considered a firearm that accepts detachable magazines and not a firearm with a fixed magazine.

Upstate is more amicable to ownership than the city, however you still need to comply with some pretty silly laws (that seem to be constantly changing).

Check out NYfirearms.com for learning more about compliance. The good news is you're only about 1.5 hours from the PA border, which is much better. I'm not sure about storage possibilities in PA, but it may be something to consider.

Ahhh, good old Syracuse. The only thing putting it on the map is the University. However, you'll love hunting with proper sized deer, lots of hiking, camping, and wilderness areas around. There are lakes and rivers with great fishing, Salmon run in the fall. Skiing is 45 minutes away in the Winter if that's your thing. Turning Stone casino is 35 minutes away. Golf courses galore including a PGA course at the casino. There's the Finger lakes region and wine country. Niagara falls is 3 hours away, NYC is 5 hours away, D.C. is about 6 hours away. Don't miss Dinosaur BBQ. Ra-Lin sporting goods is a nice gun shop. You will fall in love with Wegmans grocery store. Sounds stupid but the DeWitt store is bigger than ANY grocery store in the state of California. Imagine Whole foods, but about five times the size. I eat there every day when I visit. No traffic and you can drive from one side of the city to the other in 20 minutes. With all that said, I probably would move elsewhere before I moved back. Too many long Winters and rainy Summers for my liking. Let me know if you have any questions about the area, I lived there for over 30 years.

Just curious how the law works for new residents. I see that most featured ARs are currently banned (due to detachable mag) under the SAFE act. But what about handguns you own? I see that certain features (threaded barrels, external mags) are banned but my FN and M&P's don't have those features. Is there a method for registering or however making my guns legal to possess if I ever move there?

I agree with AregularGuy. I lived in Syracuse for just under three years, Baldwinsville and Liverpool. For the most part it's a good city, getting a concealed carry permit is easy, Dinosaur BBQ is the best, there's (if it's still there) a great pub, the blue tusk, something like 200 beers on tap. If you like hunting, the deer and good sized and taste delicious, plus there are white deer in Romulus at what once was the Seneca Army Depot about an hour away. Lot of great micro breweries in the area as well. If you ride motorcycles, lots of great roads to ride on.

He can, once he gets a concealed carry permit. In NY, you can't even handle a pistol in a gun shop without a permit.

Unless things have changed dramatically in the last 5 years, for the majority of NY the rules are thus:

multiple types of permits: hunting only, home only, employment only, and unrestricted concealed carry. Basically meaning that with the home only permit, you can have a pistol, but you have to keep it at home, you can take it to the range, but no where else, same with the hunting and employment only ones.

You have to apply for your permit in the county that you reside, and you can only buy pistols in that county. For example, I first got my permit in Syracuse, but by the time it was actually approved, I was back in college, in Chautauqua County, south of Buffalo, I had to drive all the way over to Syracuse to pick up my permit, and because I could only buy pistols in Onondaga County (Syracuse) and I didn't want to make multiple trips out there, I went to the sheriffs office, picked up my permit, went to Gander Mountain, purchased my pistol, drove back to the Sheriff's office to have the pistol put onto my permit, drove back to the store to take possession of the handgun, and then drove home.

But given all that, the Sheriffs office people were very friendly and helpful, same with Chautauqua County, not so much Erie though.

Plus almost every single Sheriff in upstate NY have said they refuse to enforce the "SAFE Act" BS, my cousin is a deputy and was told that if anyone tries to enforce that law that they will be fired.
