    Not another Marketplace rant..

From time to time, I search the marketplace to get an idea of what current prices are. For both buying and selling items. I'd say at least 75% of the time, the price has been deleted if it has been sold.
Just now I did a quick look to price gauge a rifle and most of the listings had the prices deleted.
I've, personally, never done this. I always leave my listed price and sometimes list what it actually sold for. I know at least one reputable site states that prices must be left in the ad after selling.

Anyone else bothered by this? Has this site ever considered making this a rule for the marketplace? or at least a suggestion to sellers?

I started a thread once, years ago, floating the idea of leaving the prices so others can see what the market will bear.

Many misguided rants against it, "we don't need more rules".

There's no reason for it but everyone around here is perfect, so shame on you for suggesting change. You should be embarrassed.

I like the idea of leaving the original ad price after the sale. If I were selling, I would have no issue doing that. Maybe some sellers are embarrassed at the prices they have sold their wares for? What could be a legitimate reason for always wanting to take the price down; or for not listing the actual final sale price as well? I like the transparency of letting others look at the historical sales values. I do not see how that could, in any way, negatively affect the market place.

I always leave the price in the thread. I just mark it "SOLD" and move on. I can't see why price would need to be deleted. I often look at previous threads for the same gun I'm selling to get an idea of what others have sold for.

Seems a lot of people do delete the price. Don't know why.

I use to remove the price, but the last 3-4 handguns/rifles I've sold, I just update the for sale ad with the actual selling price. It give other sellers/buyers an idea of what the going rate is.

This would be very helpful, as it would also deter everybody from listing their used firearm for 20% above MSRP.....

I replaced the price with the word sold to indicate it was not available so you wouldn't waste time opening an add that wasn't for sale anymore. The last item I sold about 2 weeks ago still has the price and I'll leave it but I've only sold about 10 items so it didn't start with me.

Why is that? If the item sold how would this "rule" deter anything?

I uses to use the strike tag to put a line through the price and put sold next to it and in the title... Invariably I would get a jackwagon messaging or bumping the thread asking if it was still available. So now I just delete everything and mark the title sold.

I think the point is that if 5 listings for the same gun were all $500 -/+ $50, someone wouldn't list another for $700.

My standard is to write ***SOLD*** (in red. color choices not showing right now?) at the top of my first post

I would prefer that the sold price was listed.

I'm a bit bothered by it, for the same reason you are. And equally mystified as to why people do it.

This is a better Marketplace rant than usual.

                        This is probably it.

I think some would still list it for $700 or more. At the very least we can all see that they have been selling for a lot less and just move along to another gun for sale at a more reasonable price.

You could just ask the seller what he sold the item for. I do it all the time.
