The cost is so minimal to be prepared. My wife and I went to Costco and bought cases of food and water for a very minimal amount. We looked for foods that had the longest shelf life and that we liked. We figure as a case of food approaches it's "best by date" that we would either use it or donate it to a local food bank and then replace it.

Guns, ammo, food, water, propane, charcoal, batteries, generator and gas. I have a resposibility to my family to keep them safe, fed, and housed.

I think there have plenty of very solid reasons and scenarios listed in this thread that are possible. Think of the investment as insurance, this preparedness is probably the cheapest and best insurance you can get.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

lol.. now who is living in a fantasy land... if you think your family could "live off the land" in some disaster that's bad (meaning many others are trying to do the same) then you're as delusional as those you railed against in your opening post.

I prep for a huge earthquake.. food, water and enough ammo to keep those that are unprepared from taking it away..

oh ya cuz nobody else is going to compete with you for that. Its not like every retards dream is to hunt for sustenance in SHTF

Even if you live waaaay out there, one tank of gas will get lots of people from LA or SF to your neighborhood

In response to your original post, we 'prep' for many reasons. It might be someone is just intelligent and buys lots of ammo because its obviously going to increase in price. Or it could be because he just doesn't like shopping and wants to be done with it. Or it could be that he knows how governments naturally take freedom and he is preparing to do his part in defending that freedom.

Yea, I'm pretty aware of all the game animals in my neighborhood and the few rabbits and doves would only last a day or two. Although I did see one squirrel a few days back. But I would enjoy getting my revenge on the ducks and geese at the park cross the street, they love to rub their protected status in my face, especially after hunting trips.

Heck, California is probably 3 more good drought years away from a REALLY bad situation. Moreover, things can go from being ok to not very quickly. We'll see something major in our lifetime. If a big enough quake hits, all the freeways into (or out of) So Cal or your area will be shut down and water and utilities disrupted. As soon as the airports can get cleared, I would expect massive airlifts of water and food. Until then, we will each be on our own - there are millions of people here and relief won't be quick. Lay low and keep your situation out of sight as far as your own food and water. If needed, defend yourself and your family. I don't think that makes me a Rambo-wannabe or a nut.

I believe the SHTF when it is no longer economically feasible for the US to continue printing money. No natural disaster required. It will probably reach globally.

A few months ago we had a planned power outage. PG&E was tying in new transmissions lines so we were scheduled to be without power from 8:00am until 4:00pm.

4:30pm rolls by and still no power. I break out a single lantern and a few candles. 6:00pm still no juice folks in the neighborhood are milling around outside talking with each other.

8:00pm....still no power...neighborhood is dark. I go outside and look around. I can see some folks in their homes with flashlights and candles.
My house is lit up from my trusty Colman. A few of the neighbors walk over and ask how I have electricity. Huh? I said it is a lantern, and that didn't anyone else "prepare" for the power outage?

The lights did finally come back in around 10:00pm. But it was a real eye opener to see how almost ALL of my neighbors had not even the basics to get by for a few hours of no electricity. And pretty much all my neighborhood is retired folks and ex military.

And how my home stoodout even with just one lantern burning let alone a generator.

I do not consider myself a "prepper", but I am prepared to be self sustained for about 3-4 weeks. After that I would need to make trips down the hill to the creek for water.
After 3 months I would be out of food. But my thinking is that by that time I will know which way the wind blows and would take other measures for the survival of my family.

What do you hear ???...... Nothing but the rain. Well grab your gun and bring in the cat.

The first step in preparing for a SHTF scenario is to define the scenario. I'm not really worried about a zombie apocalypse. I think my most likely SHTF scenario is a large earthquake or similar event that may disrupt civil services, including police, fire and ambulance for as long as two weeks, so I have prepared for that. That doesn't require 20,000 rounds of ammunition. But another likely scenario is that the government will make it harder and more expensive to buy guns and ammo, perhaps compounded by panic buying and hoarding in response to another Sandy Hook. It's in preparation for that risk that I have stockpiled a considerable supply of ammo and reloading supplies.

USA is pretty rare in that there hasn't been a major SHTF situation in most parts in living memory.

Now the USA is no longer an overwhelmingly monolithic Christian White nation with a single strong homogenous culture (especially the Govt and elites), and is no longer economically as dominant, it seems almost inevitable there will be either a SHTF or Soft Crash Landing soon.

Back in Old WASP America, if a crisis or disaster happened "nothing would happen" except clean up and recovery afterword. Now any change means various groups will be jockeying for position and making Power Plays, which could easily lead to SHTF.

I'm pretty worried about a Zombie Apocalypse, or at least something much worse that Ebola (and panic) or even something like "28 Weeks Later" Rage Virus, although IIRC there has never been a (biologically) infectious mental illness (unless you count Syphilis) I don't see why it couldn't happen, and that it effect would snowball its spread. Two words "Bath Salts".

yep, I could see the USA getting sucked into Doomsday when around the world our 100s of foreign military bases start getting attacked when they become involved in "defending American interests" which are getting attacked when the Funny Money stops working and across the globe billions of pissed off people feel they should seize any US Govt or private American owned stuff.
