Transfer fee is getting ridiculous

People need to make some effort to explain the fee breakdown when they start a thread *****in' and moanin'.

Assuming the transfer fee was $70, then I wouldn't say that falls into the 'ripped off' category. I'd say one can probably do a bit better shopping around and doing some legwork.

However, $70 for a brick and mortar store, with inventory they are trying to sell, is not completely outrageous.

And broken down, that is still a rip off to me when almost every shop I deal with will do it for half that cost. Sales tax paid is not what im looking at since that changes with the price of whatever you are getting, could be 20 dollars tax could be 100 dollars. What I'm looking at is the transfer fee they charge, not DROS which is mandatory on any firearms purchase. When a shop charges 60-100 dollars just for the transfer from FFL, that is a rip-off. There are plenty, and not just a handful, that will not charge anything more than 35-40 dollars for ANY transfer fee. You can try and justify it with anything you want, but charging someone 100 dollars for a fee that you can most often get somewhere near by for 35-45 dollars, is a rip-off and the only gun stores that ask those numbers are ones intent on gouging the unaware.

Location is an important consideration. If you have to drive an hour each way (4 times) time, gas, wear and tear are real costs that should be factored in.

$117 DROS and transfer fee for a $246 C&R pistol from j&G Sales. Did I done goofed?

About 10 years ago a local shop around here charged $100, plus tax, plus DROS. They claimed that if you bought a gun from somewhere else they lost out on the profits. They said they have to pay rent and they are in business to make money, not allowing you to buy guns cheap. I don't like it, but I can understand why they do it.

I'd say you done goofed by not shopping around.

Last out of state transfer I got required SSE and it was $126 total OTD including the SSE, taxes, and DROS.

$40 for out of state transfer from J&G., And $40 for the SSE. $46 was to the state of Commyfornia.

Yeah, that threw me off as well the first time I used Mt. Pleasant Arms for an online purchase. The place can be a little tough to pick out form the road the first time you go, but once you get past that, the place is great. Fees are reasonable, e-mails are responded to quickly, there is no screwing around on paperwork and you will usually be in and out in 15 or so, etc. I can't speak highly enough about this FFL and I now drive by several others to go there.

I just recently paid $75 for an out of state transfer fee, plus the $25 dros, plus the sales tax on the rife of course.. Looks like i got boned as well my friend. hah

Yep... I never pay more than $35

Where I really save money is in all of the extras that I buy along with the gun(s). Those high-dollar shops will be the first to close when the inevitable day comes that gun sales ease up..

There was a SoCal FFL so butthurt about stuff like this they refused any guns transfer shipped in from Buds. I think this policy was ended though. I will be buying a lot more guns online once I finally move out of state and can get $10-15 transfers, no DROS fees and no roster to deal with.

Good bunch of guys there...it looks a bit sketchy on the outside, but I've never had a problem, and they know their stuff.
