For it is not the abundance of knowledge, but the interior feeling and taste of things, which is accustomed to satisfy the desire of the soul. (Saint Ignatius of Loyola). We argue that the boldest claims of big data (BD) are in need of revision and toning-down, in view of a few basic lessons learned from the science of complex systems. We point out that, once the most extravagant claims of BD are properly discarded, a synergistic merging of BD with big theory offers considerable potential to spawn a new scientific paradigm capable of overcoming some of the major barriers confronted by the modern scientific method originating with Galileo. These obstacles are due to the presence of nonlinearity, non-locality and hyperdimensions which one encounters frequently in multi-scale modelling of complex systems. This article is part of the theme issue 'Multiscale modelling, simulation and computing: from the desktop to the exascale'.

Many of my PhD-educated colleagues are just like this. They're "fully vaxxed" and are looking forward to the boosters. We go to lunch, they're unmasked. When they get up they throw the mask back on

The problem is that science has ceased to matter. It was once a useful tool for humankind, now it is a weapon.

          Today this is the situation:
          1) Kamala Harris claiming that getting vaccinated will end all the mask mandates
          2) The CDC pushing for another mask mandate even for the vaccinated

It's a lot to figure out. (Actually it's not: This is all a heap of lies)

So..... all the detailed discussions here and around the world don't really amount to a hill of beans. Any actual scientific conclusions will be covered up or ignored.
It isn't Covid that killed science, it is "global warming". When there's an agenda that isn't supported by science, there's no chance for that narrative to survive the scientific method. The global warming alarmists pioneered the "science denier" approach to shutting down debate. I think that they got the idea from the racists who use the term "racism" to shut down any discussion. It has worked like a charm for them.

Covid was the scientific communities foray into politics period.
            1. Compared to what?
            2. At what cost?
            3. What hard evidence do you have?

For many scientists, science is a religion. Makes it hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I experienced this personally, as my research inadvertently showed a government funded program was actually counterproductive and not merely ineffective.

Suddenly the private and public organizations that were working with me and my wife (who was working on a separate research topic in the same field)

were told to stop giving us access by the highest government official associated with this industry.

Luckily, we had already saved the data, which were now being denied access to.

Pure science is, at least at the university level, IMHO a myth...
And that paradigm tends to be primarily about:

Funny how people still buy into this crap when they've been setting dates that appear far enough out to scare people into action, then those dates pass and nothing has changed in the least.

Is this "year 2000" in metric or imperial? Perhaps I'm converting incorrectly but it appears to be at least a wee bit in the rear view by now.

Once again, Covid wasn't the first foray. There may have been one prior to this one, but we can clearly state that "global warming/manmade climate change" was one of the first major jumps.
