Small Rant - stimulus checks and general crapping

    Just a small rant.

I am starting to get soooooo pissed off with politicians and govt.

My wife and are both fortunate to have great jobs and a decent life. We've both worked hard; put our ownselves thru school, (paid for by us) and have struggled and sacrificed and saved to make a decent living for ourselves and our single child. We have worked hard to secure our future both near term and in retirement.

Living here in southern California, we both have to work to afford a great, SLIGHTLY above median home. We happily pay taxes... a crap ton of taxes. We invest in the community and the economy. Our income is decent for a married couple, just over 200k a year. Thats SOUNDS like a lot, but truly, after you account for mortgage, health insurance, child care expenses, food, future college tuition, retirement savings, property tax, income tax, ****ing insane high gasoline prices and dmv registration fees, car insurance, home insurance, etc, etc. You know - all that responsible adult crap, $200k just isn't that much. So like it or not, as you all know being in southern California that's not really a super windfall. Sure, if we had that income in Texas or Arizona, we would be sitting very, very nice.

But, I cant stop feeling that we are constantly being crapped on.... according to dems and the govt, we make just a hair too much to qualify for various tax rebates, we make just a hair too much to qualify for tax incentives for student loans. Child care expenses.... nope - make just a hair too much.

Yet, at no time do we ever actually get to a point where we are anything more than middle class. And I dont want to be. We are happy here. We live in a middle class neighborhood, own a middle class home, drive middle class cars, visit middle class restaurants and go on decent vacations every couple of years. I have my slice of the dream. But the govt seems to want to take my slice and part it out to others.

We barely qualify for any tax deductions. So much so that we both put a MASSIVE amount into tax withholding each year. I mean, not only claiming zero exemptions, WE ACTUALLY PAY MORE into withholding! We put as much as we can into 401k to help lower taxable income AND STILL OWE thousands in income tax each year.

Its just starting to make me sick and angry hearing about those who dont do anything; dont work and dont contribute get a free handout and then ***** that it isn't enough or that they can't make a living on minimum wage. No ****, idiot. It's called MINIMUM WAGE.

Ive lost my compassion for those who can't or wont help themselves. I have none left. It's been sucked out of me. I've lost the ability to try and help because I can't afford it anymore. We do donate at church and donate to goodwill a few times a year. Although honestly, I do it now more for the meager tax deduction than for compassion.

I just dont know how some ****ing politicians can think that my family is too rich or too well off and therefore dont deserve any breaks. On top of all that, that I should be taxed out of existence to help "those in more need". I think, they think, the middle class has millions socked away and are mixing us up with themselves and other millionaires that have multiple vacation homes, and private jets. I'm tired of being thought of as their ATM machine for welfare projects.

I mean, ****: Im not looking for someone to pay our way and I am not asking for a hand out. But it sure seems long over due that things could be made just a little easier for the middle class. Just a tiny little bit.

After all, as an endangered species, shouldn't the middle class be afforded SOME sort of protection?

Rant over... thanks for letting blow off a little steam.

Certainly can't argue with anything you said.

Seems like a change of state is calling you.

It's only going to get worse.

Well said Sir, My wife and I are in the same rowing boat as most of "middle class" Californian's.

We go to work and pay taxes so the politicians can give it away.

It's almost a daily conversation about someone who won't work and "expects" a handout.

Rant over, need to keep my BP in check.

You are crapped on as is anyone like you and just above you. Work hard, save, and watch the government take it, devalue it, and give to those who don’t bother. And they wonder why they are hated. I make $59k a year plus health ins and feel fortunate. I think those who drive this economy need to be rewarded not hose who leach off it.

OP, your post is depressing lol, but 100% the truth.

A lot of people have already come to the same realization that you spoke about and they are leaving in masses. Maybe create an exit strategy and think about put CA in your rear view mirror?

I’m still too young to retire, but I already know that CA isn’t my final stop.

I felt a bit like you. I just stopped working full time. My income dropped from just over 100k to 60's. Might seem like a lot but my take home only dropped 18k. My thought, 18k drop in pay was well worth only working 6 months a year and having 6 months to do whats more important to me.

Ya, I guess most would look down on me for not being a good worker bee. I have been half retired in my 40's for almost 4 years now. No complaints, life is all about balance and I have never heard of someone on their death bed say, I wish I had worked more.

I can do this because I have always lived below my means and avoided debt. I would probably work more if I actually got to keep the money.

Middle class is an enemy to corrupt politicians. It's intentional.

Your feelings towards charity have been proven out over time. Throughout history, as governments increase programs for the needy through taxation, the public reduces their amount of giving/donating along with their desire to do so.

They have the belief that they have already donated enough and there are programs for that. Not saying the government is more efficient in providing these services, but that people know their money has been taken for that purpose.

This doesn't mean people don't contribute still, just less overall voluntarily. Many times charity is done through the workplace and has guilt or pressure associated with it.

The above doesn't factor in the scandals that have been exposed over the last few decades showing most of the money going to executives pay and lifestyle for some.
"Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters." -Daniel Webster
