    870 Extracting issue? ammo issue?

For some reason my 870 Tactical gets a "stuck shell" once a while. I got this issue with both Federal and Winchester birdshots( especially with Winchester Universal bird shot, occurs every 2 shots).
After I fired a round, its extremely hard to extract the empty shell from the chamber, I have to smack the butt stock to the ground the extract the shells. Any one knows how to solve this problem?

I cleaned my 870 once a while but still doesnt solve the issue and I couldnt imagine what will happen if this happened during a home defense scenario.

It's a common problem. Carefully polish the chamber.

There are multiple ways I've seen it done. You can use a bore brush with the outer strands of 0000 steel wool wrapped on it. And some solvent. Chucked up in your drill. And moderate speed and keep the drill moving back and forth don't let it sit in one spot or you'll jack up your gun. If you google search there are much more knowledgable people explaining the process and videos available online.

Edit: ^^^^there you go ^^^^ trap55 has you covered

Check for burs/machining on the barrel extension and polish that. Here you go~

I got sick and tired of mine doing the same thing - was about to sell it as a POS. Decided instead to take it to a reputable gunsmith to polish, take off all the rough edges, clean it up nicely. Haven't had a stuck shell since, and am very happy with it.

I'd advise you to clean it up yourself if you know how to do it, or to take it to a gunsmith and have them fix it up for you.

Thanks. But I do not have the tools nor do I want to pay someone to do this( Labor rate is kinda $$$).. Wonder if replacing the extractor (e.g police magnum or wingmaster extractor) would solve the problem?

                        thanks

No, the problem is not the extra to the shells are getting stuck in the chamber due to burrs and a rough finish. You can buy the tools cheap. A wooden dowel, steel wool, and a corded drill can be obtained in the range of $20.00.

You may have just took it out of the box and started shooting it. You may have never cleaned the chamber. You may not clean weapons very often either. The perils of Cheap ammo has been well documented on all forums, especially the worst of the worst "Winchester Universal".

All firearms leave the factory with protectant of some kind on them and in them on unfinished metal surfaces like chambers and bores, because it could be as much as a year before they get to the end user. They sit in Distributors warehouses for months, then gun shops for months. so have to have protection from the factory. If you don't clean the gun before you shoot it you are going to have issues. Anyone who takes a new gun out of the box and just starts shooting it deserves whatever they get.

Inside and outside that 870 was a coating to prevent rust. If you just start shooting you cook that in the chamber and it does get sticky. If you clean the chamber like the members here suggested, and keep it clean after each range session you will not have this issue and will not be on here complaining, blaming the weapon. And no, changing the extractor has nothing to do with it and will not correct the issue. Changing the owner of the gun would correct the issue immediately.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.
