      Antagon3,

I have had a factory follower crack and a buddy had one break in half and wedge between the spring and mag tube. For HD I would just put one in cheap insurance

Well, as of 3-4 years ago (don't remember when exactly I got mine) - yes, they do. Found out the hard way, when my brother spilled some water on it and a 10/22 of about the same age. I wiped the water off (and this was in the desert too, it was fairly dry), didn't think much about it. Had some surface rust on both the day after.

Funny thing though. Got an 870 Wingmaster from 1951, that the previous owner occasionally used for waterfowl. Not a single rust spot on it (or the telltale signs of rust removal). Beautiful bluing, too.

Thanks, rino. I'm bookmarking this, even though it is beyond my current skill level.

Regarding rust and cheap parts that break, I have an as-yet unfired 870 Express with a synthetic stock and extended magazine. I got it several years ago at Big 5 for a ridiculously low price. I'm thinking even if it rusts a little or breaks a little, it'll be a good gun to learn on.
