Advice for a new Remington 870 Owner?

    Hey guys!

I finally picked up my first shotgun (and the seemingly quintessential shotty for any collection), a Rem 870. I'll be getting it out of jail next week.

I'd like to "pimp my ride" with some tacticool accessories, as well as practical ones mostly for a home defense application. More specifically, I know i'd like a pistol grip style stock (but can only seem to find the Mesa Tactical ones, any others?), some sights, and any other accessories you guys would recommend or enjoy.

Also, I thought I'd take this chance to ask for any advice you might have for the ownership of a shotty in SoCal and the operation of the 870.

It seems that there's so much the 870 has to offer it would be nice to talk to you guys that already have some experience with them.

    Thanks ahead of time!

I prefer mine simple. I have a Hogue stock and forend and an ATI magazine extension. Easy to handle indoors and at the range.

This may be a bit toooooo tacticool for me, but that follower looks like a winner! Time to put my Amazon prime shipping to use.

            Thanks!

I added the Mesa Side Shell carrier to mine. They make a 4-8 for the usual left side, 4 for the right and a 4-6 for the car stock. Gives options that I haven't seen with others.
I have the hogue pistol grip and forend on mine.

Why don't you just take it out and shoot it a few times before you go mall ninja with it.

I have been shooting 870's for many years, and my favorite configuration is wood stock and nothing aftermarket. Try it out like that before you hadd a bunch of stuff that makes it heavy and stupid looking.

I'd add that there are quality aftermarket items out there. A good metal folower and a quality side saddle are fine. But you can use the shotgun as is and it will work fine. I like the low-tech velcro shell holder that you just slide onto the buttstock.

Agree 100%. Save your money and buy ammo, then go out and shoot it.

Pretty much the plan for now. I have no desire to add rails or anything too crazy. I'm going to take it out as is first and see how things go.

I'd like to put together a sort of shopping list (aka amazon wishlist) to have some goals to work towards as far as what accessories I'd like. I know for sure I'd eventually like a pistol grip style stock, maybe some night sights and/or a flashlight, but that's about it.

Don't buy into the idea that there is anything you 'need' other than the capability to wield the weapon with skill and competence.

There is a whole industry of products out there that are marketed to people who want scary looking black guns that they will admire and showoff to friends but never really shoot.

I have mixed feelings about lights too. I find them useful in clearing unfamiliar locations but in my own house I can creep around in the dark with just ambient light and avoid showing the BG where I am.

Just because you have a light doesn't mean you have to use it. I think it is a good idea to have a light on your HD weapon to be able to clearly identify the target before squeezing the trigger.

I don't have a 870, but on my Mossberg 500, I have the light mounted in front of the for end, and my left thumb can either lightly touch it to turn it on or press the button and leave it on.

                              Just my opinion
