Left Eye Dominant

Thank you. Shot trap for third time today. Switched to lefty and matched my prior best of 18 on first round! So much easier to see and follow bird with both eyes open! Only complaint is that my shoulder and face are sore. I guess aiming lefty is easier than mounting lefty. Need to get lefty vest now.

I put the tape a small piece on my left lens and shot my first 75 straight and later on didn't need it, retrained the right eye, my skeet guns are fitted to me. I tried at first closing the left eye but you loose depth perception, with the tape I shot both eyes open and you don't see the tape at all.

Thank you. But since I'm just learning trap I think I'll just learn lefty. Getting right mount will take some time though.

I am right handed. I shoot pistol with my right hand but I am left eye dominant. I have been that way since I first shot a rifle about age 12...maybe younger. So I shoot a rifle left handed...my wife is the same way. Shooting lefty is so natural for us. So I wouldn't worry too much about learnin' lefty. The body knows you are left eye dominant and you will adapt very quickly.

It is not hard to shoot left/left. I am right/right but have trained myself to a certain degree to shoot left/left. The trick is having the technique down shooting both sides. It has to be the same so your brain can easily digest it. We are used to seeing mirrors all of our life, so the brain can do the mirror image thing. That is if you want to shoot left/left.

If you want to shoot left/right then I would suggest a patch over your left eye. Your brain will have no other option but to comply with what you're doing.

Either way it will be easier to go to a clinic to work on some sort of technique to make it easier.

I'm right handed, and "was" right eye dominate. An old injury to my right cornea finally caught up to me and I didn't realize it until I couldn't hit paper with iron sights, and my kid was kicking my butt on the trap range. The vision in that eye got so bad, my left eye took over.
Glasses just weren't going to cut it, so I did my homework for Lazik surgery, and went to Griffin & Reed in Sac. For you guys that are interested, Dr. Reed is a shooter, and I can tell you it's well worth an evaluation to see if he can help you.
With a pair of "try" glasses, he showed me how my brain was "hardwired" to be right eye dominate. Pun intended, it was a real eye opener! I wasn't a good prospect for the standard fix of near vision in one eye, and far in the other. It can mess with your depth perception at distance, and I drive truck.
He told me ahead of time, that I would probably have to have two procedures, and I just had the second.
The "secondary" long time healing is going to take another two months until my eyes will settle to the corrected vision, but when they do, I'll have the right eye dominance back.

Beginer left eyed / righty....I get the shooter to start shooting left/left

Old righty that shot for years that never knew they were left eyed....then its the patch, train the right eye and any other trick in the bag.

It is easier to teach your left hand how to shoot than to reprogram the sides of your brain. Every one has different degrees of handedness and eye dominance. See what works for you

Good for you! One of the kids on my junior team just switched in the middle of last shooting season to left/left. It took him a while to catch back up to where he was shooting right handed, but he did it, and is now better than ever.

I was lucky that my dad taught me to shoot right handed as an ambidextrous kid. He didn't know anything about eye dominance; it just fit the guns we had. So when I got into trap as an adult, I could be a two-eyed shooter right away. I think we have at least one of each in the family now.

You can train your right eye, it just takes time.

I've read that's impossible without blocking your left eye some how with a dot or tape.

I am left eye dominant. I have tried all kind of solutions, ended up what works best for me was to eventually train myself use my right eye.

I bought one of those sunglasses that allow me to easily switch the lens (e.g. Oakley Fast Jacket.) I put a clear lens on my right eye, and a medium-color lens (e.g. grey) on my left eye.

This way, when I aimed at the sight/scope/target, my brain would naturally switch to my right eye (Sorry I didn't kow the science behind it, but it did work for me.) Yet, I could still see things and walk around in the range normally.

I also tried to wear this clear/color sunglasses at home, to let my brain/eye get used to it.

After a few short weeks, I started to become natural to use my right eye. Now I have no problem using my right eye for shooting.

Just want to share my experience, hope it helps...

Badass, thank you AxHo! Sounds like a very easy transition. I put tape over my left lense and after walking around and shooting the second half of my first skeet class (SoCal!) I felt like I was going to barf and had a migrane the next day.
