Gotcha. Yeah it could have been a bad box I bought. I just learned to spend a little more to save myself the headache from now on. I gave the rest (about 75 rds) to my buddy and his mossberg which ate it up lol!! Still love my 870 though.

It's pretty easy if you haven't already found it. You get a wooden dowel that will fit in a power drill. Wrap some steel wool on the end of the dowel. And run it in the barrel on the receiver end for a couple minutes and bam.

Please, do NOT shut up. Allow the rest of us to do so while you tell us how it is, hahaha.

But, seriously, everyone interested in an 870 should first check out aippi's website. If you aren't drooling in the first 30 seconds, you must be on the wrong website.

Following aippi's steel wool trick the gun is cycling like a champ again. After every use we wipe down with a rag and then lightly lube the rails and bolt/receiver, cycle a dozen times, and put it away.

My only gripe is that the finish on the receiver is pretty thin. I will address that by either parkerize or duracoat - someday.

I didn't know you were a member here! I have referenced your website several times with regards to the differences between the 870 and 870P, and all around 870 knowledge. Glad to know you are aboard.

Thanks guys for the info. I get paid tomorrow so my hunt for a 870 starts then.

BTW, here in the South, used shotguns are plentiful. Would you choose a used Wingmaster in fair shape over a NIB Express? If I did go out looking at used SGs what do I look out for?

The Remington 870 is the standard from which all pump actions are compared to. I own an 870 12 gauge express with synthetic stock. Bought it brand new about 7 years ago for 299 I've never had a single problem of any kind. It's shot thousands of rounds of ammo. Mostly cheap Walmart trap loads but also 3 inch steel duck magnums. Ive shot ducks, quail, dove and pheasant. There is a cult following between 870 and mossberg's. I own both and prefer the design and action of the 870 However I prefer the safety mechanism on the mossberg.

Plastic parts . The only plastic parts on express would be the stock if you went synthetic which I'd recommend for a hunting gun. (ive dropped mine in mud) trigger gaurd and the magazine follower.

870s are a great first shotgun as they are reliable and easy to strip unlike the mossberg's which is a bit of a *****.

The rust issue on my 870 is my only concern. It needs to be well oiled otherwise it rusts pretty bad but it's just cosmetic. To remedy this buy a bottle of eezox rust prevebrative. After each use apply liberally and let dry and don't touch the metal after. Won't have a problem.

When it comes to price if you shop around you probably can still get one for 300. Check Remington's website as they frequently have mail in rebates (they may even now).

Right now is a good time to buy because Remington has $30 rebate. If you can find them on sale... Plus the rebate that's what I paid 7 years ago

If possible, save up and give aippi a call.

If not, yes, I'd take the used wingmaster.

I own an 870 express that i bought from big 5 last year. I have put about 1000 rounds through it so far from cheap wal mart crap to high end buckshot and law enforcement slugs. I have not had one singe problem. Plus you will have the ability to swap parts easily and change out chokes easily. I use a combonation of remchokes and dead coyote. The 28" barrel has great accuracy. With the dead coyote choke and hornady shells, i can keep buckshot in the 10 ring at 20yrds. It makes a great first shotgun

So I stopped by my LGS today to get in some range time and while I was there I took a look at their selection of 870's. They did not have any used 12G 870's but they had a couple of them. The first one I looked at had a shinny blued finish, 28 or 30 inch non ribbed barrel 2 3/4 chamber with no removable choke tube, chrome bolt, beautiful shinny wood with a long fore end and a medallion of a duck on the rear stock and had a action that was silky smooth. The Salesman said it was a special 870 made to Duck hunters International hence the medallion on the stock and was priced at $399. The second must have been an express as the finish was parked, barrel was a 28 - 30 inch ribbed barrel with removable chokes, wood was not as good as the previous one but wasn't bad and the action was gritty. Asking price was $350.

I was really taken by the Duck Hunters International but it was much more than I was willing to spend and it had a fixed choke.

I plan to check some big box sporting goods stores this weekend.

Do you want to be the next guy to start a "My 870 wont eject properly" thread? Why even chance it, get a Mossy and put your reliability fears to rest.
