I had ejection issues with my 870 Express. Squirt some Remoil in the chamber and go shoot 300 rounds, then keep spraying the chamber with Remoil. It goes away once the bore is polished, then you have a great all around gun with plenty of accessories.Comment

I'm also interested in purchasing a Remington 870 this month for HD. This will be my first shotgun.
Any suggestions? 870 Express (26/28" barrel) vs the cheaper Express Synthetic 18"?Comment

If you liked the Wingmaster, setteling for an express might haunt you. Keep shopping the used market for a sweet Wingmaster. The're out there! I recently picked up a used 12ga Wingmaster with 28" light contour barrel with screw-in chokes, scrolled receiver, and a decelerator pad.So I stopped by my LGS today to get in some range time and while I was there I took a look at their selection of 870's. They did not have any used 12G 870's but they had a couple of them. The first one I looked at had a shinny blued finish, 28 or 30 inch non ribbed barrel 2 3/4 chamber with no removable choke tube, chrome bolt, beautiful shinny wood with a long fore end and a medallion of a duck on the rear stock and had a action that was silky smooth. The Salesman said it was a special 870 made to Duck hunters International hence the medallion on the stock and was priced at $399. The second must have been an express as the finish was parked, barrel was a 28 - 30 inch ribbed barrel with removable chokes, wood was not as good as the previous one but wasn't bad and the action was gritty. Asking price was $350.
I was really taken by the Duck Hunters International but it was much more than I was willing to spend and it had a fixed choke.
I plan to check some big box sporting goods stores this weekend.
It was in great shape and after breaking it down & cleaning it, it really came alive! Great looking and silky smooth action. Took it out for some informal trap on Sunday and wow, great gun! Cost me a 20ga Beneli Nova that I never shoot, because I just can't shoot it for !@#$%, + $200 otd (taxes, dros, everything). It was a good trade for both of us.Comment

I opted to pick up a Express Synthetic at the beginning of this year and am glad I went that route, saved a few bucks.
As mentioned the main item that may or may not need attention for 100% performance/reliablility is polish the barrel. I only experienced grief with mine with low quality bulk shells, but I went ahead and polished mine anyhow to ensure smooth feed/extract.
While the gun was disassembled i deburred the receiver a bit from a couple bits I had noticed and hit the inside with the steel wool just to catch anything I may have missed with a couple passes.
I did upgrade a few of the internal bits with the 'police' version (springs & extractor) and lightly stoned the hammer. Swapped out the stock and forend for the Hogue Overmold kit as it suits me better. The 870 synthetic express has performed brilliantly since with anything I feed it.Comment

I have had mine for 3 years, never a problem. But then I got the Chinese clone 2 years ago and never had a problem with it either.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment

Not a darn thing. It will do what you want; deliver some buckshot to protect your home.I would like to buy my first shotgun and decided to go with a Remington 870. I think for the price the 870 Express is a good deal and is readily available at Walmart or Dicks for around $300 - $350. I have read a lot of people who do not like the Express due to plastic parts and a finish that wears down very easily which leaves room for rust. My primary purpose for a shotgun would be for hunting so I was thinking about a 28 inch barrel but planned to buy a 18 barrel to switch out for around the house needs.

My primary HD weapon is an 870 express. Have put 1000+ rounds through it without a hitch. The key to it is that the wife loves it also, which puts my mind at ease, but not the wallet since now she wants one of her own....Friends will help you move....Good Friends will help you move the body.

I would not get a new 870. I got a new one and it rust if you even look at it. You should not have to oil a gun every time it gets picked up. My buddy got a used wingmaster and it is way better quality on fit and finish. None of my other guns rust when touched once, my 870 does.Comment

if you are not a purist, consider having your new 870 parkerized. the 870P is parkerized from the factory, which is partially why i purchased one.
my old (1965) Wingmaster is the beauty queen.Comment
