with all due respect - have you seen the outcome of this "research"?...

I'm not knocking the effort necessarily - just questioning the method.

But then again, CA academic standards (compared to other states) could be an indication that this is how it's done.

I think you're missing my point. Again, I'm not knocking his effort (so the dedication, as you state it, isn't in question)...

His question is a science question, CGN isn't the place I'd go for the answer... and in fact, if I were the teacher teaching the student, I would "learn" the answer (from simple physics) then explain to the student.

Think about it - after reading this thread, which answer would you want presented to your child? With the only explanation being, because CalGuns said so.

          Okay - enough off topic.

I am surprised a student in a School in CA can even mention a shotgun and not get in trouble. I commend the Teacher for not making an issue of it as many teachers would have sent the kid to the Office over such a question. Kids are getting suspended for even drawing a picture of a firearm in some schools.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

His question is a Specifically Gun-Related science question, CGN (a specifically gun-related forum with many very knowledgeable members, and a few crackpots) isn't the place I'd go for the answer... and in fact, if I were the teacher teaching the student, I would "learn" the answer (from simple physics) then explain to the student.

How do you know he isn't doing that too?

Think about it - after reading this thread, which answer would you want presented to your child? The one from a teacher who is willing to go above and beyond, and put in some extra effort on order to pique the child's interest With the only explanation being, because CalGuns said so.

How do you know that's all the explanation he would be giving?

              Okay - enough off topic.

^^^ popcorn shot from a shotgun is more about thermal dynamics than anything gun related.

but carry on thinking the basis of the kid's question is something to be enlightened by on Calguns.

CA academics shows how successful this states method of teaching is.

BTW, points can be made without the annoyance of over-sized font.

I think the blame for that falls more on the state and school administrators more than the teachers.

As I recall, (it was a long time ago) my best teachers were the rare ones who would stray from the norm in order to grab my interest.

Hmm, it never really bothers me. Quite the opposite actually, it helps me see the points in question. But then, you strike me as a feller who's rather easily annoyed.

this method seems to be more polite and professional/mature (and perfectly distinguishable)... the bold large font comes across as a childish or screaming...

interesting though that you find a way to determine my demeanor over the internet... maybe you don't have much experience in this interwebz thing?

Didn't read the whole thread ...

I think the kernels probably won't survive the initial acceleration of ignition. I has to withstand 0 to 1200 feet per second in a nano second! I'm thinking you will have chicken feed after it leaves the barrel!

This experiment must be performed. Science demands it! (Well, really, I demand it, but it sounds better that way )

Well, you can use your (or other knowledgeable shooters/reloaders) knowledge of thermodynamics and understanding of stuff to first of all see if it is theoretically possible:

The best popcorn kernels contain 13.5% water
                                They burst at 350-450F
Figure out how many calories of heat must do this to one kernel

                                Gun part:
A bullet only takes about 1/2 millisecond to exit a barrel when it is shot
A rifle bullet takes about 1.5 ms to exit the barrel
Let's be generous and say a load in a shotgun takes 2 ms to exit the barrel before everything is exposed to the cool air and the cooking stops.

How hot does the flame need to be to heat X grams of water from room temperature to boiling to vapor @ 400F in 2 milliseconds given the surface area of an individual popcorn kernel. That assumes putting the popcorn in direct contact with the powder (and you can say in direct contact with the primer flame which contains Leat Styphnate. Bad stuff to eat).

Knowing that the flame temperature of nearly all smokeless powder is about 3300-3500 degrees, would that temperature for 2 milliseconds be enough heat to raise the popcorn temperature to 350-400 degrees.

Now the fun thing to do is to take a pile of Red Dot or other fast powder, put some popcorn in it and light it up! The exposure time would be much longer than in a shotgun so if it doesn't pop, you know it will never pop in a shotshell much less than on protected by a wad so this sets an outside limit. Try this at home before doing it in the class.

Then take a propane torch, figure out if the flame is 3000 degrees and see how long it takes for a popcorn kernel exposed to it to pop.

You can take this question and explain it as deep or as shallow as you want and have fun doing it.
