Why do people keep repeating the rack of a pump shotgun will make an intruder cowering in fear? It's incredibly stupid, and not a sound argument, and it might get you killed.

Your goal in coming out on top in a home invasion isn't to scare the intruder, it is to stop the threat as quickly and effectively as possible. Stop repeating the same old bull****, take some proper training classes, and learn to be effective with your weapon. I don't want a "scared" intruder in my house who knows my position because I gave it away. I want the piece of **** bleeding out on the floor, his last thoughts running through his mind is he picked the wrong house.

Anything less is a failure on my part.

And someone was saying 95% of the burglars will run away. Well, is the person who just broke into your home one of the 95% or one of the 5% who have no qualms about killing you and your family in order to take your TV?

If I've already got the bad guy "stopped with his hands up" I keep the light on at a "low ready" position. Barrel doesn't point at him, but light stays in his eyes due to its wide throw.

(And I need to be damn sure I see my target before shooting it, if needs be)

There about a million Hollywood inspired firearms myths like this that get repeated over and over again. Anybody with any sense of tactics knows not to announce their position in a firefight and never assume their adversary is stupid.

While we are the subject of lights, light discipline is key. Don't just turn it on. If you need to, and do not see the bad guy, turn it off and MOVE because incoming might be headed your way. Train for the worst case scenerio. Assume the intruder is not a complete idiot, and use sound tactics. Nobody ever died from using proper tactics. Plenty have died using poor tactics.

This is true of most argument ridden threads on Calguns (and similar forums). Lots of experts, few people with actual training.

It seems to me shotguns have more myth believers that other firearms thanks to Hollywood. The list of myths surrounding them is seemingly endless and you see them repeated again and again on this sub-forum.

Far too many people think it is the ultimate weapon for every situation. Few know how hard it is truly use it well. Things like knowing your patterns and holds, the need to quickly switch between buckshot and slugs, the need to quickly and efficient clear malfunctions and truly know the manual of arms is completely foreign to them. They think they can let it collect dust in the closet, shoot it once or twice, never get an realistic training...and somehow by the grace of God rise to the occassion should they ever actually need to use it to defend their life.

I am no shotgun expert. Of the weapon systems I own it is the one I am least proficient with. However, I know enough to know just how much I do not know...and how much more there is too learn.

The Competition, Action-Shooting and Training section here on Calguns has ads for schools near you. Everybody could use a little more training, no matter how good they are. If the shotgun is your weapon of choice for home defense, learn to use it right. It takes very little money or time comparatively speaking...and it is very fun.

Just as an aside...burglary is an overwhelmingly day time crime committed when the occupants are away with stealing property as an object. Hot prowl..night time burglary is very rare and freaky as nobody who thinks normally would force their way....(you do lock the doors don't you?) into a home that is occupied. The usual scenario is that the homeowner leaves in the morning,followed shortly by his wife and a POS burglar kicks in the door and steals property including the guns that the owner arms himself with at night to guard against the intruder that chances are will never come. If this doesn't apply to you

Ps...I am not trying to ridicule those who arm themselves with shotguns at bed time...my point is that if you keep guns in the house you are risking their loss if you don't secure them when you leave during the most vulnerable times...day time. And...you will not get them back...almost never.

yah i was watching videos on youtube of break ins and almost all of them were during the day while the resident was at work. one woman caught the burglars because she has a system that txt messages her and e-mails her so she can take a look at her cameras on her phone.

Still not sure why people associate outfitting your HD weapon with a flashlight automatically makes you a professional door kicker. Clearing a house is a separate act completely.

Look at how police enter a house with a serious threat. They have a stack of armed officers ready for the entry and what do they do . . . send in the K9 first. Clearly houses, offices, etc is not for the faint of heart and likely to get you injured or killed if you have a committed adversary.
