Nice thing is you can use most of the same accessories as the 870.
I dont think they ship firearms to California.

Remington 870 or mossberg 500 will do just fine. Flip a coin if you cant decide.

Went to Gun exchange and got a beautiful older Winchester 1400 12 gauge. Looks brand new, not a scratch on it and shoots flawlessly. $399.00.

Don't rule out a nice used.

If that was your budget, you could have gotten a nice new one.

I started out with a pump but I graduated to a semi auto, you should try them. They're a hoot.

Have fun with your new toy.

If you are a lefty and buy an 870 you will want to reverse the safety with a Fortmann part. Ii did it myself but would prefer the Moss ..top of receiver style safety if I was given the option. If you are a righty..the 870 Police Magnum is pretty nice but ALL shotguns can do an adequate defense job and fill another role too.

Weekendsniper, why on God's green earth would you go "cheap" when speaking of a piece of life safety equipment? I understand budget constrants, but your budget allows for excellent equipment choices. DON'T go the cheap route. Buy cheap, buy alot. Buy quality, buy once.
The Mossberg combos or a dedicated SD/HD 9 shot 500 will last. If needed the CS is very good. If so inclined you could also go the 870 route....but if your life or a loved one's life is going to depend on a piece of equipment, make it the best you can afford.

                    This.

I have a 590 for HD and love it. Unfortunately I prefer a pistol grip stock and didn't do my research (good deal at Big5 on Black Friday so it was more of an impulse buy).

It gets stored with 8 00buck in the tube, 5 PDX1 in the side saddle, nothing in the chamber, and the safety off. In a stressful situation, its easier to rack one into the chamber than fumble with the tang safety/pistol grip combo.

However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.

+1 on either Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 or 590

I run a Remington 870 Express and like the way it handles a lot.

I'd run a Mossberg 500/590 with no qualms or concerns whatsoever.

I like the idea of a heat shield as my barrel heats up quite a bit sometimes, so if I was to go Mossberg, I'd likely get either the 590 Special Purpose or the 590A1 Special Purpose, more likely the latter.

I'm happy with my basic Express with bead sight at this point.

I'd recommend picking up the Magpul Shotgun DVDs. Great starting point.

Then take a few shotgun courses.

                      just something to share:

everyones gonna say mossberg 500/590, remington 870, a pump would be better for HD too since easier to clear jams

Fn tps that's what I run. It's basically a Winchester 1200 I beleive. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I love the ar sights, ar grip, ar stock and smooth action.

yes, the FN TPS is a winchester 12/1300 defender, in slightly different clothing but it is still produced, which unfortunately the defender is not. lot of good advice here, mavericks, mossbergs, remingtons, stevens, many others available at reasonable prices but you should really handle some and see what you like the feel of. i personally don't much care for remingtons, i had a mossberg for a long time until i handled and shot a defender, then i had to have one. they're only available used, of course, but if you can get hold of one, you won't be sorry. good luck.

we tend to get caught up in the 500 870 talk alot . i seen a post for the stoeger m2000 and that reminds me of the linberta semi auto they have been touting on budsgunshop for the past few weeks . im a super advocate of the tactical semi auto 12 gauge i would imagian with a extended mag tube would do some serious justice for your halfway battle ground . best value 12 guage mossy mav 88 hands down end of story .
