My first shotgun was a Big 5 special....Mossberg 590. No problems at all, still standing guard in my bedroom.

Do it! You can find these at big 5 and Turners that are in your price range. You might even be able to score on with a heat shield.

I have one and love it, eats everything FTF one time but that was because she was bone dry - operator error. Other than that, she works flawlessly.

The only input you'll get here is the 500 or 870...go back a page or 3 on this forum, you'll see what I mean.

Like others said, Mossberg 500 or Remmington 870.

Personally I use a Winchester 1300, harder to find but a very nice shotgun(discontinued so you have to buy used), and in your price range since they can usually be found for around $300.

My buddy has a nice heavy H&R Pardner pump with a short 18.5" barrel. The weight really cuts the recoil with buckshot and slugs. I've seen them go for as little as $200. Great gun for the money. I shoot\hunt with an old wood stock 500 with a 28" barrel- love it.

If you can hold off a bit you can get a Mossberg 500 at Big5 for around 249 at the thanksgiving weekend sale. (or is it black friday??). Its one of those sales where if you get to big 5 before 10am or something they knock off 30 bucks. Then the rest of the weekend the 12ga is on sale for 279. The ad will come out about a week before the sale.

I got mine for the earlybird price. Then i bought a adjustable stock..I got mine cheaper than this one on amazon.

Then I sold the OEM stock on ebay for a few bucks. Bought a sling and done deal.

Another thing you should look at if you do go the Big5 route is shot capacity. Some are 5 shot...others like mine are 8 if im not mistaken.

Yes good guns. I have the Mav 88 5+1 and it fits in my "secret spot" nicely. Originally I wanted to buy 7+1 but Im glad I got the shorter one. They have the 7+1 Maverick 88 on sale right now at big5 for $219.
