I got this in my e-mail about a month ago and have been thinking of picking one up for the wife. Was looking more towards a 20 gauge which has been what is holding me back.

Nice thing is you can use most of the same accessories as the 870.

Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are both great guns and are right in your price range. You can also find the 500 in a combo that includes a longer barrel for hunting or sporting clays.

        ETA: I own both.

I prefer the 870. I have friends who prefer the 500. I managed to pick up a Winchester 1300 defender that had 5 rounds through it for $80 once and it was a great gun too.

I agree on finding a combo if you're buying new (or used). It will save you money in the end.

I should add that one big (or not so big) difference between the two, is that the 500 has an ambidextrous safety, which some prefer.

500 would fit your budget there is a lot of other cheaper shot guns people talk about never shot any but have shot the 500 and it is a great shot gun for the money

I just checked out the Big5 specials down here in San Diego. I came up with the 500 combo for $299, regularly $399.

Stevans or Hawk are good enough for your needs and only about $200

I would go with the mossy500 combo. I bought the maverick 88 HD shotty and even though I love it, I would have much preferred the combo so I can have both options. I opted for more more shots.

Remington 870 or Mossberg 500. Whatever fits your preference. I have an 870.

Between the 500 and 870. Do you want a pistol grip stock? If yes get the 870 for its safety placement. If you want a standard stock, get the 500 for its ambi safety. I have a 500 combo with the 18.5" and 28" barrels and I am very happy with it.
