If its going to be for hunting, just keep in mind that some of the older shotguns (pre1980s) had softer barrels and wont handle steel shot, if you buy used.

If buying new, Benelli Nova or Browning BPS(out of production since 2024).

Browning invented the Remington version that pre-dated the Ithaca. The Idea behind the gun was because JMB wanted the spent hulls to end up in the boat rather than in the water when Duck Hunting. The BPS is simply an updated M37. However it will not Slam Fire like the earlier versions of that gun. The Trigger must be Reset by letting it move forward before it can fire again. This is common to pretty much all current Pump and Auto Loading Shotguns. Mossberg's were like this from teh beginning.

My Ithaca will Slam, Fire and it drove me nuts when learning to shot Skeet with it because I was taught to Trap the Trigger at Front Sight. and on the Doubles if I did Remember to Rack the Slide??? the gun would fire well before I had picked up the bird. IE: MIss the shot !

When I originally was taught how to shoot a shotgun my friend told me to "Punch the Trigger" So when I started doing that again I stopped having that problem.

Now……if I could find a Browning BPS, I’d be a happy camper (20 or 12 gauge). As it looks now, a Benelli Nova is in the mix.
