Benelli Nova, Super Nova or Nova 3.
I have one in 12 gauge & one in 20 gauge.
Never had a problem with either.
I had a new Remington Fieldmaster in 20.
It had FTEs with 2 out of 4 brands of ammo. Had to mortar some of the shells out.
Returned it for repair twice.
First trip back, they said they fixed it, but it still had the problem.
2nd time back, they said there was nothing wrong with it.
The Benelli ejected all 4 brands (from the same batch of shells) with ease.
Sold the Remington almost immediately.
Shoulder the Benelli's in the store, if you can.
The 12 (if it shoots 3.5" shells) can feel a little long between the hands.
But, it hasn't hampered me from hitting birds or smashing clays with it.
The Nova 3 (I haven't handled one) max shell length is 3", so it should be shorter between the hands.
I would look for a used one (both of mine were purchased used).
I also had a Nova back in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Shot a lot of ducks with it.
Sold it when Remington came out with the 870 Super Magnum.
I'm still a big fan of the older Remington's.
If I was getting a newer pump, I wouldn't hesitate to get another Benelli.

Bull,
Assuming this is mainly for hunting purposes - I’m pretty sure you also know your stuff already ; )
A Used Wingmaster in 12 or Wingmaster lw in 20. With more than a handful in my collection (and only two being express models) - I believe you can’t go wrong for a simple, reliable workhorse. Sure, my model 12s are more finely crafted, and the 37s are too. The 870s older brother, the 31 is without a doubt smoother and refined. But there’s something just right imo about the 870 in blending affordability and simplicity with solid manufacturing and ease of use/maintenance/accessorizing.
I’ll commend the original Nova/supernova too as I’ve used one in the field; a bit glockesque and chunky for my liking but dednutz reliable and rugged, even at 11 degrees (with wind chill)
I’ll still give the 500/590 (let’s not forget the 835) a recommendation too, especially for defensive/tac use and as another affordable yet reliable field gun.
id throw the (prior generations) BPS in there but definitely not as svelte feeling as the others above…at least in 12g form.
cant go too wrong with any model I just listed but there are some drawbacks to each…parts, chokes, etc but no reason to not take a vintage good gun afield

Thanks!
serial puts it at early 70s iirc - it’s a 28” featherlite supreme grade… marked skeet
was lucky it came with the original case too!
ugh the special fields have always been on my mind - love those straight English stocks - every time one pops up I literally have already bought something else.
I’ll see your special field and raise you…
early (50s? Date code on bbl is worn off) 870 Wingmaster… in 16ga..with a vent ribbed IC barrel!

New 500, older 870, vintage too many good ones to choose from. I’ve been considering a 37 lately or a model 12 (lightly, I don’t really have a need for another shotgun right now and my budget is tapped out from getting barrels for my rifle before the new restrictions go in) but I also have a fairly deep stock of bismuth both loose shot and factory loaded for guns that I would be less interested in running steel through. If I wanted a duck gun specifically I might pick a synthetic 500 since I’ve had a gun go swimming before.Comment
