Get a Mossberg 500 combo (18.5" + 28" barrels) for $380–$430. It’s the king: bombproof, parts everywhere, eats anything. 20ga if he’s recoil-shy, 12ga if he wants to feel alive.
Budget beast? Maverick 88, same gun basically, $240.
    Done. Don’t overthink it.

100464614.jpg Here's My M37 made in 1940 with Cutts Compensator. I paid $100 for it in 1973 I bought it from a friend who's dad bought it new from Coast Hardware in Ventura CA in 1940. I redid the Fajen Wood I bought in 1975 and sent it back to Ithaca for a look see and Re-Blue a few years ago. Sent all the Choke Tubes with it and the only part they replaced was the Gold Plated Trigger after 85 years !!!! Took 30+ years to find all the Choke Tubes and Wrench, and the Box was the last thing I found. The IC tube was on the gun when the pic was taken.

BOBGBA: Here's my attempt to create an affordable Mossberg "Special Field", since I can't afford a Real Remington one. I got $350 in this one and it works OK. It doesn't swing as well on the Skeet Field as the Ithaca does. Still learning how to shoot it. Remington Shortened the Mag Tube to 2+1 on their 870 and I couldn't do that with the Mossberg so it is still 5+1. I think the fore end is still a little too fat ?

        Everyone,
Thank you for weighing in on my post. I’ve owned several older Wingmasters and a first year Benelli. As I began downsizing, I told my kids to pick a couple guns out of my collection. So now, I no longer have any pumps. Ideally, I’d like an older 870 or Benelli, but I don’t see many for sale. I refuse to buy a new or newer 870 as, in my opinion, they are junk. I’ve never looked closely at the Mossberg but maybe I should. Thanks again for your comments! Much appreciated!

I have a 2014 870. It's a piece of junk. It's my AOW and every time I decide to shoot it, I realize what a piece of junk it is. Old 870s (Pre-Freedom Group 70s/80s or even into some of the 90s are great), lots of good ones out there. But the the newer ones are garbage and I regret buying my AOW, I should have made it a Mossberg 500 but at the time, the 870 still had a good rep so I wanted an 870. Several factory defects and even though I have worked through those defects and replaced parts, it's still rough cycling, it jams, what a terrible version of a once great gun.

No, just a regular old 870.

Mossberg 500/590 with the adapter inserted that allows it to cycle mini-shells. Effectively doubles your capacity. Great home defense feature. Huge aftermarket parts allowing you to customize to your exact specs.

What adaptor are you talking about? Mini clip?

From what I understand the 590 will run 3", 2 3/4", and mini shells.

you’re thinking of the 590S model. i don’t believe the regular 590 models can run the mini shells without that adapter thing.

Gunbroker and Armslist would be good start, perhaps local to your city.

That would make a sweet AOW.
