Got my 590 via auction sight fer $350, already have 2 M9 Bayonets, one is Ontario, the other still in the blue as issued pouch unopened. Put the taller front bead sight on it from Defense Tactical as well as installed THEIR adapter so the I run Minis, through 3 inchers, with that adapter you can mix and match the length of rounds in the magazine.

Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.

Appreciate the replies. Person seeking to purchase will also need some kind of locked storage (apartment livin' with roommates) which can be moved by a couple of guys, so the advice to consider less expensive alternatives is helpful.

Mossberg has quite a range of offerings in the 590/590A1 line so hopefully the selected dealer will have a few in stock when it comes time to buy. Does that 11% tax apply to PPT transfers as well?

I just got a Beretta Ultima Patrol for $1050. Under 7 lbs. I put 100 rds through it yesterday running drills of bird, buck and lots of slugs. Barely feel anything today because of the light recoil. The pump actions kick a lot more.

I'm sure it is very good but I am old school and dislike aluminum receivers. I know, in 100 years it will not matter but so it goes.

Extractor only double guns are painfully slow to reload. Why intentionally handicap yourself in a shootout?

OK some clarification here. the Maverick, M500, and M590 all have Aluminum Receivers. The 590A1 is the only one that has a Steel Receiver. The Bolt Locks up into the Barrel Shroud (all steel) so the gun is not any stronger with respect to when it is in battery with either type of receiver.
The Steel Receiver on the 590A1 was built specifically for the Military and much Rougher use. It Doesn't affect the way the gun operates, other than being able to take more abuse.

My Choice is the M500 18" for HD. You should be able to find one for less than $500 new or less than $300 used.. I buy used ones and make them into Tactical Guns by adding Magpul Furniture and some Barrel work. I also rework the internal parts to take care of all the sharp edges so teh gun runs much smoother. Not hard to do and you can save $ by doing it yourself.

My latest gun was purchased for $150 and I put another $150ish into it. so you too could have something like this for Around $300.

54301-media.jpgHey, it's "only" a 20 gauge, Mossberg 20-20, but it still has class.

I used to own the 590A1 USSM Model. Its a heavy robust beast, more useful for tactical application purpose than the home defense-grab-a shotgun scenario reason I bought the shotgun for. Its also front heavy and I am not a big muscular gym using guy. Needless to say, I sold away the piece. Nothing wrong with it, just way too heavy for me.

That 40-year-old 870 with two factory modifications would be a superior firearm to any sub-$1000 shotgun you might purchase today.

                                1. Flex-tab conversion kit - this consists of a new bolt w/ a slight bevel under the bolt face and a carrier (shotshell lifter in the action) with the U-shaped cut. This allows the shotgun to be cleared of any misfeed (very rare) to resume normal function.

                                2. Supercell recoil pad - might find one on ebay or wherever. These are a Remington-packaged closed-cell, molded foam recoil pad like none other.

Your 870 already has a short barrel and a magazine extension. It would be the better gun. I own two so configured, both made in the 870's 50th year of manufacture 1980.
                                .
