LGS Employee Says Mossberg 590A1 With 20" Barrel FTW

Have not purchased any shotguns of late. I have a Remington 870 from forty years ago on which I installed a Remington riot barrel and a Remington magazine extension tube. All purchased long ago. I like it but word on the street is, Remington shotguns ain't what they used to be. So, someone I know was asking "hey I would like to buy a shotgun for home defense." Hence the conversation with the LGS employee.

His recommendation was this Mossberg. Apparently it does come with the bayonette. Thick-walled barrel, steel receiver, what's not to like? Their price is about 20% less than MSRP, just under $900. Can I tell this person this Mossberg choice is blessed by the collective CG wisdom? The only Mossbergs I have ever fired was a 1940s-era M144 .22 rifle. Thanks in advance for all helpful replies.

yes. if i were buying new i would go with mossberg. if ur buddy found an old remington wingmaster or police magnum, those would be good too. btw pretty sure all the mossberg 500/590s have aluminum receivers.

I asked specifically about that and he said it was steel. I didn't handle one so I can't say one way or the other.

The TAVOR Tactical 12 gauge shotgun is a gas regulated bullpup that can be configured for either right or left side ejection & operation.

A 20" barreled 590A1 is gonna be pretty heavy fully loaded. You may want to check out the 18.5" barreled 590, Model number 50778. About $450 new. A bit lighter and easier to handle (my experience).

real USGI bayonets are crazy expensive. I'd check and make sure the knife is legit. Might be gun is mil-spec from real contract, but not the knife.

                  This ^^^

My first HD weapon was a 590A1 20" 8+1. Runs fine.
It's my last resort shelter in a room "I'm crazy and blasting anyone coming through the door!" weapon.

If you ae in the San Diego area, Discount Gun Mart has the Maverick 88 Cruiser for $230 until the end of the month, regular stock at $250. Mossberg 500/590 models starting at $420 through something over $500, even the 590S on sale. If you want a gas gun the 940 is also on sale. No association other than being a customer.
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

It's a muzzle BRAKE, not a muzzle break. Or is your muzzle tired?

That's almost double the price of a Mossberg 590 SP. You have no need of the bayonet. If $1K is your budget, I'd push you towards a Beretta A300 Patrol, or buying a more standard rig and outfitting it with a WML, sling, and possibly an optic or XS big dot bead.

Not a single person in the crowd is rational or reachable because the parade's for gay folks and it's in SF.

I prefer Mossberg to 870 all day, but it's a ford/chevy/dodge thing. Both are plenty good.

I wouldn't bother with that 900 dollar shotgun for a simple non-gun-guy home defense shotgun though. Spend less money for just as much gun without the fancy stuff that's unneeded, unless you just WANT the fancy stuff which is reason enough for me.

The Thunder Ranch version is a little shorter, $662 msrp, and is set up for a micro red dot. No ghost ring sights though. It looks slicker because of no bulky sights or Pic rail.
