I bought a Mossberg 590A1 (5+1) back in 2014 for $400, and yes it has an aluminum receiver but instead of a plastic trigger group and safety the A1's have aluminum. Then just the other day I was at Turner's and they had a Mossberg Maverick 88 Folder on the shelf for MSRP $293 and thought, "how cool is that"! Looking forward to picking it up after I cool off.

For home defense, huh? The amount of time you’re gonna be actually using it why not just save yourself a bunch of money and get a Maverick. Those things are dead, reliable, and function perfectly. Not sure what the expensive 590 would do that the Maverick wouldn’t.

I always wanted a 590. I picked up a maverick 88 20 inch 7+1 on sale a few weeks ago and i dont think i personally would bother spending the extra money on a 500 or 590 now. I got an $8 pic rail on the mag tube with a light laser combo and hogue 12 inch lop short stock and the defender tactical mini shell adapter, so now its a 590s clone set up for cqb for well under $400. The mavericks are light too starting at just 5lbs.

Everything costs more. Many guns use MIM - metal injected molding over machining.

the old moss 500 had more parts in the pump assembly. They eliminated 2 to keep the cost down.

I believe the 590A1 is probably the best value out there for a new shotgun with solid parts.

another choose it to buy an older 870 mag police trade in - they come available more than I would thing possible.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I was driving around today and passed by an LGS. Was half thinking to stop and see what it would cost to have them receive an Ithaca 37 for me. It's a want, not a need. I have my aging 870 with a mag extension and a riot barrel (factory kit from Remington, got it back in the day), so I don't need the 37 at all.

But I will cop to looking at various accessories for that 870, like a Streamlight Racker or maybe an aftermarket stock.

As a Freedom Group era Remington 870 owner, recent 870s have had QC and fit and finish issues, I know mine did and it was an AOW meaning that it would be a PITA to try to send in so I fixed it all myself. Defective springs, spring return, follower, etc.

Mossbergs are great and I would recommend a Maverick 88 for any newbie first timer on a budget or a 590 if they can spend a little more. But the Maverick 88 just takes abuse and asks for more, freaking amazing little tank for almost no money.
Have someone you know watch this video to see just how freaking good this dirt cheap shotgun is. I'm going to buy one just because I think it's a great gun for almost free! I love good cheap guns, there aren't that many on the market.

Last Christmas I decided I had been a good boy and treated myself to a Mossberg Maverick 88 18.5" Folder and enjoy shooting it so much at the local range picked up a companion 88 20" Security on sale at the LGS. Both guns together cost me a little over $500.

                  A 590 shouldn't run more than $600. If I was paying close to $1k, I'd get a Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical or a Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol.
