If you can find the old ljutic wads or hard paper wads and use 12 grains of green dot use 3/4" of wads tamped hard and kosher salt it is good to about 15 yards. Hurts like hell and wound is hard to deal with. gives a lasting memory to trespassers

I've had a few debates with my brother about this.

If you point a gun at someone and pull the trigger you are hopefully in defense of your life and protecting yourself, thus you are shooting to stop. In which case you want your gun loaded with the round best suited for stopping an attacker in that situation. I can't imagine a situation where rock salt would be that round. I Imagine the cup would hurt more than the salt at anything more than point blank range.

If you want a noise maker to scare someone off you'll do just as well with blanks. Hell, even a loud airhorn would scare off anyone likely to be scared off by your noise-maker shotgun, and would be about as useful in defending yourself on someone who wouldn't be dissuaded by noise.

A good one would be to wire speakers in our front yard on remote that would play a per-recorded police siren really loud, that'll scare em off. Then you won't even have to deal with those pesky guns.

Anyway, no, I don't know where you can buy rock salt shotgun shells.

You can- to an extent. The smell wears off in 45 mins to a couple hours, quicker if you leave the action open and there's a wind blowing.

Black powder guns.. You can smell those things for days (then they rust if not cleaned!). The old black powder stank horribly.

Just like smelling a gun to see if it had been recently shot. Something from the black powder days. You're not going to be able to smell a smokeless firearm to see if it had been shot , if you can, the TSA could use you.

I'm looking into it because a friend of mine just moved into my neighborhood (like 2 blocks away) in the area where the san bruno pipeline explosion was and she has had her house broken into on 2 occasions. Someone knew this house was empty for sometime and they r comin in for stuff so I've been think of gettn a shotgun for personal defense and loaded it with 1 salt round and then followed by either buck shots or slugs. It just REALLY pisses me off hearin people r still tryin to steal from people who just went through a rough event.

Plan on getting sued. You should never use less than lethal rounds from a gun (unless you are trained LEO). A using a gun is always considered lethal force, if you use less than lethal rounds, obviously lethal force was not necessary. Say goodbye to your stuff and hello to your cell mate bubba.

Rock salt was used and immortalized in movies as a skat round. It was most always used in a s/s, hammer black powder shotgun. Never in a cartridge/shell gun.

I think what Repubconserv was saying that you shouldn't fire on someone if they're not a lethal threat to you. By using non-lethal rounds your basically saying he was not a threat but I chose to shoot him anyways. I think that is when you get sued.

If an assailant does not imminently threaten yours or your family's/companions life, you can not use lethal force. To discharge a gun at an assailant, no matter the load, you are exercising lethal force.
