is there such thing as a shotgun shell that has rock salt or sea salt in the shell as opposed to BB's or a slug?

From the box o' truth link posted earlier:
"I've also heard that some folks used to use this load to run off "bums" and beggars in the old days, during the Depression."
Every thing I've seen about salt shells is that they're mostly used to "scare off" trespassers and the like without hurting them too badly. They're not meant to kill or wound the target too badly. Not something I would want to be using if someone wanted to do me bodily harm.Came here for the gun porn, stayed for the... well yeah the gun porn made me stay.
My posts should be taken with a grain of salt as I am in no way an expert on anything.
Currently interested in purchasing a Ruger 10/22 in the Santa Clara County area. Preferably the compact/wood stock version. Leapers UTG Quadrail would be a major plus.Comment

You would probably have to roll your own using a black powder charge. In the early 90s, a friend and I rolled our own by dumping the shot charge of loaded smokeless ammo. It didn't work too well (slt is too light)- it left a bunch of unburnt powder in the barrel, and went of with a 'poof' instead of a BANG. I think the light weight doesn't build enough pressure for smokeless to work.

I believe that if you used black powder, you would get a lot more velocity out of the rock salt, probably would pepper you good. Probably something used in the black powder days.
Just like smelling a gun to see if it had been recently shot. Something from the black powder days. You're not going to be able to smell a smokeless firearm to see if it had been shot , if you can, the TSA could use you.
I laugh when I see it occasionally on a TV show where a Detective will pickup a revolver, open the cylinder, smell it and say "It's been recently fired".Comment

When my dad was about 10, his cousins took him out to raid a watermelon patch. Let's just say that my dad learned what rock salt out of a 12g felt like. So, yea, it's been used for years.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
