No love for the Moss 500?

Hi guys, love calguns.

I see most posts here are about the venerable 870, yet no one mentions the Mossburg 500.

Is the 870 generally held in higher regard to the 500?

I grew up using the 870 and I like the platform.
I recently purchased my first HD weapon and I chose a 500.
I did so because I preferred the location of the safety.
I am comfortable with my choice and am satisfied with the 500.

Both the 500 and 870 capabilities are far in excess of my (or my wife's) ability.

So, is the 870 more popular? better in some regard? Or am I thinking too much about nothing?

Interested in others experiences.

There's plenty of love for the Moss 500/590. I just did a quick count in the Shotgun Gallery section and saw 13 separate threads for Moss 500/590 and even one for the Mav 88.

As noted above, there is tons of love here for Mossberg shotguns; 500, 590 and 930 are all frequently posted on. And like most gun boards, there are the frequent "500 is better, no 870 is better" threads. Hopefully this thread doesn't devolve into one.

By some, yes. I own an 870, have owned a couple others in the past, and it's mainly what I used as a LEO. But I also own a Mossberg 500 and it's in the bag that will be tossed into the truck if we ever are forced to evacuate in any kind of disaster situation.

10 million + 870's sold versus many million 500's (the 870 has a ten year head start) and the fact that both guns have been deployed by the military would argue that they are both classic and quintessential designs.

And yeah.... you're probably overthinking it.

I think my fellow Calgunners answered part of your questions.

The only thing I can think of that'll make the Remington slightly more desirable is the steel reciever vs the alloy reciever of the Mossberg 500. That said I have both and I shoot both in skeet as well as a Winchester 1200 & Model 12. If its a good gun it'll be loved! I think the Mossberg is much loved here on Calguns!!

870 is the overwhelming favorite in American police armories. That probably has a lot to do with its relative popularity.

Had the almighty not inspired the people at Remington to design and build the 870 I would have a 590 by my bed and several 500's in verious configurations in my gun safes. The Mossberg 500 or 590 will be there when you need it for whichever need you have. And my Dad gave me his 500 in .410 and it has put several meals on the table in past few months.

500 is my home defense shotgun due to its easier imho for lefties to use.

I own a 590A1, friend owns a Remington 870 Express Tactical. Mostly, I think it's just the popularity of the 870. The 870P might have a little more on the 590A1, but between 500's or 590's and 870 Expresses, I think it's pretty much preference.

I would be glad to own an 870, if it weren't for that darn solid loading gate stopping me from easily removing a shell that's on it, although I probably could make a hole myself. That's the deal breaker for me.

I love my mossy 500s so much I have three of them. 2 in 12 gauge and one in 410

Mossberg 500s are popular for the exact same reason as Ruger single actions and Hi-Points.

I have a tactical mossberg 500 and an 870 express hd. I love both my shotguns but for my home defense I rely on my mossberg for my overall go to gun.

My best friend has a Mossberg 500. I've shot it a bunch of times. They're great shotguns and I bet they're pretty even when you compare the 870 Express and Mossberg 500.

He was probably referencing the low price point, while still getting a good quality gun. Price is the reason I chose my 500, and also part of why I chose the Ruger P95 and the Hi-Point 995TS carbine.
