If you want a pistol grip, 870, the safety location is much better for that use.

For what its worth, I have a 500, and love it, but Im also not a fan of pistol grips.

I have both and both are great shotguns. The mossberg works better for me because I am a lefty but still love my rem wingmaster that's smooth as glass. See what fits you best and what Your most comfortable with.

Both are great, shoot both, see which one suites you better. To one their own!

But if you really have to nag me about which one... i'm a bit more partial to the 870 (as aippi will really tell you to get too!)

My first shotgun was a Mossy 500 so that's what I prefer. I'm used to the controls on it. I want to get a 18.5" Maverick 88 and put a PGO on it just for fun. Basically I want the cheapest shortest way to get a PGO shotgun ...probably get the Knoxx breachers or the Hogue pistol grip.

I also like that Mossberg is 100% made in USA (not sure about Remmington, they might be as well).

But alas, I'm off topic. I think either one works great and you wont' be mad with either one. They are great.

                  Definitely go with an
                  870. I really can't tell you why but I have an unexplainable general disliking for Mossberg 500s and am very partial to the 870 when it comes to this debate. That being said I know that many people are happy with their 500s and I'm sure you would be in the same boat.

I too have owned both the 870, 500 and 1300. I sold the 870 and the 1300 but kept the 500. I like the controls on the 500 and the elevator design. It makes loading shells a breeze. I can't stand the loading gate on the 870 and 1300. The 500 is also drilled and tapped on the receiver for scope/optics options.

I own both and love them. You can't go wrong with either.

                                Why? I've shot trap with a 30" - 870 with a full choke....
