    Rem 870 Vs Mossy 500

    Hi guys,

Which one you suggest, and why? Main use: HD, Range, Hunt....in that exact order. Won't be used too much, but wanna pass it down to my grand kids...

Im new to shotguns, so considering a self auto loader also...

    Let me know.
    Thanks in advance.

Cant go wrong with a mossy, ive owned one for years. Reliable as hell and isnt picky with what you feed it. I also like that the safety is mounted on top of the receiver. Either way, both are great guns and get the job done

Generally one gun will not fit all your needs. Some find the combo deal where you get a shotgun with a field barrel and a HD barrel a good setup.

If you want a buttstock with pistol grip, the 870 is the way to go due to the safety placement.

Personally I like the 870 better but not sure the combo kit is available on an 870.

Big 5 Mossberg Combo-Pack will satisfy your needs just fine.

I just drosed a mossberg combo on sunday. Its a good deal for what you get. The total was under 330 out the door. I am going to be late for dove though.

Depends on where you like your action release lever and your safety.

            I like 870's

870 has a much better position for the pump release lever
The 870 is steel, where as the 500 is aluminium (not bad either way, just preference)

I got the 20inch 870 with 7 round mag tube. Only problem was it rusted damn quick, I ended up just duracoating it. Also my 870 came with a metal extractor, not the mim one.

My bro got the the big 5 combo mossberg 500, and the gun just feels cheap, the action sounds less then threatening, BUT it has been absolutly flawless, and has sent alot of milkjugs full of water to their graves, as well as clays.

There is alot of "noise" lately about remington not being as good as they once were, I can see alot of this with my 870, it needed alot of polishing, and deburing, as well as the damn thing rusting within 3 weeks of having it home, I am happy with it though, and it looks wicked with the side saddle, and sling/flashlight clamp combo. I will try and post pics of the two side by side if you want.

As far as I understand, the 870 Express has a different finish than older 870s.
Thankfully I live in the Sacramento area where it isn't super humid, and incidental rust isn't a huge deal. However, I did shoot my 870 once in the rain and that was a horrible idea. I spent hours (probably partially due to my ocd, cleaning my weapon). To fix this I will probably cerakote the receiver soon.

Action wise, I have had ZERO problems. I would trust my life to this weapon.

My basic 870. I went for it only because of the aftermarket, history of reliability heritage, price, and just the overall feel of the fit and finish. I like the placement of everything but the release as its something that makes me reach with my trigger hand and I'm not a fan of that, but I leave it ready for my wife so all she has to do is pump it and not think about anything else. I got the synthetic version in a 6+1 in the 18.5" barrel, and am going to change the tube to be a 7+1 and the furniture to old 1960's wingmaster furniture. Right now it has a recoil pad to extend the LOP, and a shell holder that just wraps the buttstock. Can't wait for the trade on the furniture and it should be a looker when she's all finished. I'm a fan of the parkerized finish with bright shiny, high gloss wood. It'll essentially look like the one posted above but the finish will be matte rather than blued and shiny.

It's like 270ish and you get the 18" short barrel and also the long hunting barrel.

Both are great. I prefer the Mossberg simply because of the top mounted safety. Otherwise its a dead heat IMO. I have the Mossberg MILS version where everything is metal, no plastic, and a heavy "21 barrel.

Don't get the moss big 5 combo kit.
I did for $269 and regret it. The field barrel has a fixed choke and cannot be adjusted.

                            Get this combo instead:

                            Turners moss 500 combo $329

It has a HD barrel and Field barrel, plus the field barrel comes with 3 different choke tubes. Also you get your pistol grip.

                            Turners model 110278, mossberg model# 51482

Just to add, one of the reasons for my decision in buying a shotgun was to attend bjl's skeet class and found out the 28in barrel with the fixed mod choke is no good to learn skeet.

edit: i now have to buy this barrel : http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/moss...e-p-92336.html for $158 bucks and there went all my savings!

I just bought a Maverick 88 last month and Im so happy

I put a heat shield and a pachymayr pistol grip on it and Im like a kid again! The action is sloppy but I like it like that and so far it cycles like a champ! I have no problems with it.

I like a few of the 870's for finish and look but lately I have heard some bad things about them. Im kinda partial to Mossberg but they seem to be the cheaper end of the shotgun market but they still function flawlessly!

I would go with the Mossberg or Maverick to start.

The maverick is missing little things like sling mounts so before you buy look for the little things.
