    Very dumb skeet question probably

Can a saiga 12 shoot skeet? I wonder because i just joined a gum club and i saw a bumch of guys shooting skeet...looked fun but they all had long barrelled shotguns. Do you NEED a long barrell? Someone give me the low down plz.

s12 can shoot skeet. Nothing wrong with it.

Please note though that some skeet clubs require minimum length barrel (second hand info, so it might not be accurate but it kinda makes sense)

Also longer barrel=greater chance at hitting target at a further distance

Some clay ranges have policies against Saigas period. Some have minimum barrel lengths. In the end, a Saiga is not the right gun for skeet. If you really are interested in trying it, find a beginner's clinic and take it. I did just that last weekend and ended up using one of the coach's guns bacause, it was a better choice than the five shotguns in my trunk and my stepson was using the only shotgun I have that is really set up to shoot skeet. Anyway, take a class and learn the right way first instead of developing bad habits that you'll have to break.

It's also harder to follow safety rules on keeping the gun unloaded when not on station.

I have a 20" 590 and shot skeet rather well the other week. (considering it was my 2nd time)

Range rules not withstanding, there's no reason a home defense shotgun can't play at skeet.

Yes, you CAN fit a case of shotgun shells into a .50cal ammo can.

I think i found an optimal solution for ammo can labeling.

I made this target for the NRA's Marksman pistol test. I think it's a lot better than the paper plate they suggest.

I shoot skeet with a 20.5" barrel all the time, and do quite well I might add. Nothing wrong with it, but it might be a smidge harder to hit the targets once they get further away.

But yes, lots of ranges limit you to longer barreled guns, so you may not get a chance to play with the Saiga. Though I imagine it would be fun.

I saw you hit a clay bird with a 7 1/2" barrel and I know several people who regularly take out their Sagas for some skeet.

Last Sunday a few of us tried hitting clays with my .22lr Roughtledge. We actually broke a few of them.

I found that shotguns you actually shoot and hone your skills with, as opposed to shotguns that look cool when waiting for your "zombies", are much more worth owning.

Sure, you "can". Heck you can hunt Elk with a .22, if you like. Get a gun you can develope skills with and keep the Saiga for HD. Skeet shooting is big time fun and won't regret it.

I have a slightly different take on it:

If I do need my shotgun in any kind of emergency, I want to make sure i grab the gun I've practiced with the most... so it behooves me to use my HD weapon in as many different situations as i can: including skeet.

Actually you don't want a really long barreled shotgun for skeet. Long barreled guns are more for trap or bunker. Of course you don't want a really short barreled gun either. I think my Cintori is 26" and that's about right. But sounds like it would be fun with your gun so have at it.

The question was asked because I mainly want a saiga fir home defense but thought it night be fun to try skeet. Ide rather try it a few times before I buy a dedicated gun for it.

I see your point but if that were the primary concern, I would practice in a HD mode, not on a skeet range. You know, obstacles, pumpkins, pop-ups, etc.

                            BTW....love your tagline. That's hilarious.

Either find a beginner's clinic near you or just go to a range and start asking questions. Most ranges either have rental guns or some old fart just hanging around who will offer up his gun for you to try. A S12 simply is not the right tool for the job. I have at least a dozen different shotguns yet, last weekend, I used the coach's gun because, my stepson was using my 391 and I didn't have another shotgun that was appropriate for skeet.
