im thinking about getting an 870 pretty soon, big 5 always is having sales on them. whats the difference between the express and super mag express though?

First of all there is Wingmaster or Express type shotguns and the main differences are the finishes blued or matte and the second main difference is the price, Wingmasters are a lot more (but if you can pickup a used one I would). Next, there is the chamber all the new 870s are chamber for 2 3/4" and 3" shells (Some of the olds ones are only chambered for 2 3/4"), then the Super Mag fits 3 1/2" along with the smaller rounds.

Watch at Turners too. I got my 870 Express Mag for 279.99, far cheaper than I have seen anywhere.

Mine is the Express Magnum and has the Knoxx recoil-reducing CompStock and XS Ghost-Ring sights. With a Hogue forend grip and extended mag tube it's more than adequate for a self-defense shotgun. I spent less than $600.00 in all.

Sports Authority, they had a sale on them a few weeks ago. I've been waiting for a good price on them and saw this one. The cheapest I had seen it before anywhere else was for $240.

I got mine from Big5, 279.00 after the rebate. Mine is a 18" synthetic express magnum, comes with a separate lock (not ISS). Don't get the Super Magnum.

A real Wingmaster or Police are much higher quality then the Express. Both in terms of materials and fit and finish. Do a search on a couple shotgun forums and do some reading.

There is a reason the price is higher and it isn't the blueing.

Yes I do know that, I guess I should have said "some of the noticeable differences are..." I did not think it was the place to go into great detail on how Wingmasters have metal trigger guards whereas Expresses have plastic guards among other differences.

I think you misunderstood me, when I said, "among other differences" I mean there are lots of other differences between the different versions of 870s.

A used wingmaster is worth about the same as a new express, and with 8 million 870's made, it is NOT hard to find like new examples from estate trade-ins that find their way onto gunshop used racks.

I have both kinds..they all work.

This is what I put together after lots of research. Things I kept in mind:

I'm thinking about getting a forend pistol grip and either a pistol grip stock or collapsible stock for my 870 Express, sythentic stock, 18" bbl, which is my primary HD weapon.

But I do hear people saying they're useless. I think the advantage would be the manueverability in close quarters and being to shoot from the hip more readily. But I've haven't tried shooting a twelve-gauge with a pistol grip (forend or stock). What's it like racking the action with a pistol grip forend? Does it cause the gun to jerk more? How hard is it really on the wrist? I've heard that you won't get follow-up shots because of the kickback.

They're not that expensive, so I'm think about picking up a new gripped forend and pistol grip stock and trying them out at the range and seeing how they feel. If I don't like it, I can always go back.

I must admit there's a certain part of me that just wants to try out something new.

Anybody ever done this, and then returned to the standard configuration?

I've been meaning to buy one and Turners has one on sale this week. It's the "870 Home sercurity Shotgun" and goes for $289.99 after the rebate. Should I wait and look around for a better deal or is this as good as it gets or close to it? Thanks...

Just get the 18" barrel and the mag tube extension. You are asking about a combination home defense and sporting shotgun. Some people can't tell the difference between a home defense shotgun and a combat shotgun. The side saddle carriers, pistol grip stocks, slings, etc. are intended for Combat shotguns in the hands of well trained Police, security or military personell. Most of the people going hog wild, don't have the training or experince to use
the "Enhancements" effectively. Remember, a home defense gun, is just that.
It is highly unlikely that the average citizen is going to encounter a mob of marauders.
