    Remington 870

Wow, not much action in the Shotgun discussions here.

Anyway, I pick up my Remington 870 today and I'd like to get some ideas from you all about making it into a home defense shotgun.

Also, is it easy to convert from stock to home defense and back again. I may do some trap shooting from time to time.

Please keep in mind, this is my first shotgun.

    thanks,

870's are great shotguns. My 870 has really been a flawless gun for me.

My HD setup is 18" smooth barrel & 2 shot tube extension(factory), side saddel shell carrier(6), and a pistol grip full stock. I prefer a pistol grip to the factory stock, some don't. I always have it loaded with (6) 00buck in the tube and 3 00buck/3 slugs in the side saddle.

The only other addition I can think of would be a light of some sort. I don't have one on my 870 because I have a Glock 21 at my bedside equipped with a Surefire X200.

Swapping out barrels and stocks on a n 870 is really a breeze. I think anyone could do it with a few basic tools (screwdriver for the stock and a wrench for the barrel nut).

        Thanks guys.

What about the knoxx specops stock (legal in Calif?)?

So do I look for a Remington 18" barrel? I believe I have seen some for around.

Yep, Knoxx stock in fine in CA, the "assault weapon" features are only restricted for rifles (except for length).

I bet you can pick up a 18" barrel on gunbroker for cheapo. That's where I would look first.

Good luck and nice choice on your G21

I just got an 870P 20". Got a Specter Gear SOP sling for it, and the matching 6 shot butt stock shell holder. Waiting for a +3 mag extension from Dave's Metal Works. I haven't even shot it yet, but I can't wait to do it!

18" would be better for HD, but I think my 20" will be better for the 3-gun matches that I am going to use it for.

I'm not a big fan of pistol grips, and the Knoxx stock would put me in Open class, but mine did come with a Limb Saver R3 on the stock, which seems like it will do the job.

The gun looks and feels SO good! I love the feeling of handling a quality piece of equipment

yep, the 870..the small block chevy of shotguns. You can get parts anywhere.

My latest strategy with my 870 collection is to have one for every barrel type I use. Sort of like buying more reloading presses so one isn't inconvenienced too much when you want to change calibers. can't be bothered to unscrew the cap and play with a spring.

Hi, I have also acquired a 870 express magnum recently, which I got from big5. Can anyone tell me where I can buy a side saddle for it? Also, where to buy a longer barrel so I can swap out my 18 inch when I go trap shooting. Thanks

Does your 870 have the Limbsaver? If so I wouldn't swap the stock out - I also do not like pistol grips on shotguns.

Frankly other then a mag extension tube you really don't need anything on an 870 or any other shotgun - go shoot it and use your money on ammo rather then "tacticool" bling.

I'm the opposite of you, mine came with the 28" and I want to swap to 18" for HD.

I keep mine simple. Stock pretty much from Big5.

                            Except:
                            1. Front loop from Wilson Combat
                            2. Burnsed loop from MI
                            3. 2 point sling from Specter
                            4. Speedfeed I stock and forend

Other than those, no sidesaddle, no ghost ring sights, no rails...

But 870s are great, the finish on the express and be a bit more matte though, it's kinda it between now, not as matte as a P model.

A butt pad. The newer 870s (real 870s, I'm not sure about the Express) come with a R3 Limbsaver recoil pad - they are very cool and they work great.
