Need help using front bead sight

I am able to shoot my Remington 870 with an 18.5" barrel well short range at steel plates using birdshot, but need help figuring out how to aim at steel plates 25 to 50 yards away using slugs.

The gun only has a factory front bead sight and has no rear sight.

How do you aim the gun at the proper elevation without a rear sight? I would appreciate any tips or suggestions regarding this since slugs are expensive and I want to keep trial and error to a minimum.

You don't aim a shotgun .. you point it.

Practice makes perfect. Shoot the hell out of it. It won't wear out.

      ><

On a field shotgun with a bead , your dominate eye is the rear sight.

The gun will shoot where your eye is looking .......this is where gun fit comes into play

A shooter should be able to look at a target, raise the shotgun to the eye and fire.

Try some Trap shooting ( mostly 35-40 yrd shots) and it will make a lot more sense and when you start breaking them your Slug shooting at 40-50yrds will be easy to get on target.

Simple. You line the bead up in the center of the reciever. You should only see the bead. If you see any of the base you are high, if you don't see all the bead you are low.

Click on the below to see how this looks.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Except when shooting skeet!! In skeet shooting you'll wanna be closer to the first picture more then the second one. The reason for that is your peripheral is blocked by the receiver if the target comes in low. But thats skeet shooting not slug shooting!!

last time I went out I was shooting slugs low at 50 yards.... I am going with a new choke to test though.

This was with the bead sight set up as illustrated on a 18" 870 12 ga

If you could find Winchester slugs at your local Walmarts, that would be a good choice. Winchesters are supposed to be a little oversize and more accurate. Ymmv.
