    Beretta 686 White Onyx?

Saw one of these, an O/U, in a local shop a few days ago; first time I've handled one. It's a real beauty. I forget the asking price; my mind went blank when they handed it to me, like being introduced to a pretty woman. This one was a 20, which is what I'm looking for. I'd be using it mainly for skeet and maybe sporting clays. I'm not interested in competition and don't want a highly specialized shotgun for competition. I want an all around shotgun I can use for clays or upland game. No, I don't want 12 gauge. Been there. I'm getting too old for that recoil!

Yes, I know the good Beretta history with shotguns going back probably 100s of years.

But, does anyone have any experience with this model?

Great shotgun. It's "dumbed down" (cosmetically) silver pigeon. The White Onyx Sporting gets rave reviews by the sporting clays guys. For the most part, a 686 is a 686. I think the "sporting" just adds extended chokes. In the 12 I think a different choke altogether. Might be a different pad.

Myself, I like black/blue shotguns, but the silver is popular. I think Beretta dropped the "black" onyx, though they do come up for sale.

Check the Turner's ad that starts tomorrow. They have the 686 White Onyx for 1600 at the Torrance grand opening event.

I have a 686 White Onyx Sporting in jail right now. The difference between the two is slight. The sporting comes in 30 and 32 inch length and the non-sporting is 26 or 28. I believe the non-sporting one is a field gun as opposed to a competition gun which means that it has an auto safety. Every time you crack it open the safety come on. That can be fixed though. The sporting version doesn't do this as it would drive competitors crazy missing a bird because the safety was on.

I think the chokes are different between the two as well.

I love mine. It is light for hiking around chasing birds.

You'll love it. I have a Silver Pigeon (same thing) and it shoots like butter. If you're use is clays on the range, you may want to consider the 28" at Turner's.

Although, if you're comfortable buying used, they can be found for $800-/$1,000. I got a barely, barely used SP from a FFL-dealer in CO (gunbroker.com) for $1049.

Regarding Turner's, men, I'm in the SF Bay Area so I'll look for a deal elsewhere. Thanks for the good comments; seems like a fine double to own.

                    ><

The 686 is a very well made shotgun and will serve you and your grandchildern .....as mentioned find a used one in ex condition and you will find that down the road quality holds all of its value if not appriciate in value.....just don't over pay up front and remember condition is everything.

                    Enjoy.

Make sure you get the Sporting version. The Sporting will give you a wider rib and no auto safety!

have one in the safe, 20ga 28". my go to gun for dove/quail/pheasant. light enough to carry all day and a dream to shoot. i normaly shoot 7/8 ounce loads in the field and on the skeet field. mine has served me well for 7 or 8 years now. i can only imagine with the wear I've seen in the 10,000 rounds I've put through it (virtually none) that my children and grandchildren will also be saying this in 50-60 years from now.
