I'm looking to purchase my first shotgun within the next two weeks. I own a few rifles and handguns but have never even fired a shotgun. I have little to no knowledge of shotguns so I figured I would post here to get advice for my first buy. It will be for HD so I'm looking for something pump action, tactical, reduced recoil, fairly light-weight, and reliable. Turners has one that I've been considering, the Remington 887 nitro mag but I have read negative reviews. Any advice would be appreciated.

Big 5 Mossberg combo is always a hit when they go on sale. You get a 18.5" HD barrel and a 28" rib barrel with screw chokes.
You can always welcome to try the skeet clinic also! At the clinic we usually have a few shotguns to try out.Wanna learn to shoot SKEET? I am here to introduce all shooters to the sport of SKEET Shooting ....

if price isnt an issue, i believe turners has a sale until tomorrow on a benelli supernova tactical. that would fit pretty much all the criteria you put forth. thing about benelli is i dont think you can change the stock or the barrel so it's completely single purpose built. but it IS a benelli and it's awful pretty.
if price IS an issue, there are plenty of other shotguns on sale right now.
im sure anyone will agree that the most important thing is that it fits you well. go to a gun shop and pick up a few shotguns. the shotgun that fits you the best will be your best bet at the moment your home really needed defending.Comment

First shotgun? Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870 police. Please, don't buy cheap Chinese know offs unless it's all your budget will allow. The Benelli Nova is an option, but they are not making many aftermarket anythings for it. The Mossberg or Remington have been around forever so parts, accessories and GUNSMITHS that can work on them are everywhere.
They say lawyers that represent themselves in court has a fool for a client, well the same can be said for those that experiment with life-safety appliances (guns) without the proper training....Youtube viewing is not training.
Stick with proven winners....If the 590A1 is good enough for our Marines in combat...well I think it will work just fine for me in my scenario.
Regardless of your choice, go get professional training in how to effectively operate and use your new "toy". Good luck.Larry Renner

+1 Can't go wrong with either Remington 870P or a 590 or even a 590a1.First shotgun? Mossberg 500/590 or Remington 870 police. I was in the same situation was you. I ended up getting the Supernova Tactical w/ pistol grip. I think it's a great shotgun. Mesa Tactical has some aftermarket parts for the Benelli and I ended up replacing the stock with the Urbino stock and cheek riser - this ended up giving me a LOP that was better for me than the OEM stock. Highly recommend the supernova tactical.Comment

1forall.
Insight Range in Atrisia, rents 870s in 12 & 20 gauge and you have to use range ammo.
Unless you bring a gun, you need to bring a friend to shoot.
2 people renting one gun, is their version of suicide prevention.
Most ranges have adopted the 2 person rule.

On sale right now for 289. They have the tactical with adjustable stock for 389.
I would get the 289 and two barrels, then order an adjustable stock and fore grip.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment

I went with the Remington 887 Nitro Mag Tactical. The Rem. 870 Express Tac.,Mossberg 500A Tac., and Benelli supernova all were nice but the Nitro Mag just felt better to me. I was already drawn to it for it's look but once I held it I was sold. Pick-up date is the 6th, I'll hopefully get to the range that next weekend. Pics coming soon."Only a fool leans upon his own misunderstanding."- Bob MarleyComment
