I'd say pointing down just to make double sure they don't fall out. But, I don't like the added weight, bulk or mall ninja look of side saddles anyway.

I have buckshot pointing up and the slugs pointing down. If I ever need to make an ammo change in the dark, I can "feel" which shells I'm pulling from the Sidesaddle

I don't see how it's that mall ninja-y to have extra shells readily available. I got a lot of use out of mine in the last couple of three gun matches.

To answer the OP. I put the two closest to the barrel with the primers pointing up. Those are usually my slugs for loading directly into the chamber. Then all the rest are just birdshot with the primers facing down toward the ground because those only get fed into the tube to top off while moving to the next target.

That's just me. Do whatever feels most natural for you.

Brass down is the tacticool way I've found its easier to load in my Mossy 500 though.

Brass up because when you actually have to move quickly it will keep them secure. Brass down guarantees they will fall out under any real use. Brass up doesn't slow down reloading either if you have been trained properly.

If you are going over the top to port load, then brass up is probably best. Topping off the tube is, I think, the more likely/common reloading scenario and brass down serves that better. On my own guns and how I have always trained, it's brass down. I keep the two forward most holes with slugs, the other four are 00 buck.

as many have pointed out, it depends which way you are trained to do your "combat" reloads directly into the chamber... over or under the shotgun.

for reloading the mag tube, it's always faster to keep the brass pointing down since the loading port is generally on the bottom...

for the most part, you will see many people keep the first two slots loaded with slugs set up for direct chamber loading (up or down, as above), and the rest as buckshot for topping off the magazine tube.

Brass down....

I have slugs in my side-saddle, but more buck on my buttcuff. The only reason I would use one would be intentionally if the situation called for it, then run a select-slug drill, therefore, it makes sense to me to have them down.
